The 40-year-old captured on the Costa Blanca was on Spain's most wanted list
The National Police in Alicante have arrested one of Spain's most wanted fugitives; 40-year-old Diego Darío González Ghersi who is accused of sexually abusing his own daughter for five years.
Several months ago, police launched a campaign to locate 10 fugitives wanted by different national and international courts. The most wanted list includes suspects on the run with different criminal profiles, some of whom had been at large for more than 15 years.
In the case of González Ghersi, who was captured in Alicante on Wednesday August 10, the master of disguise didn't make things easy for the cops by completely changing his appearance and even wearing height insoles to make himself look taller.
Spanish police had been looking for González Ghersi for some time for allegedly sexually abusing his young daughter. The child reportedly became withdrawn, "sad and listless" after visits with her father and was "repeatedly consulting sexual contact websites".
The young girl eventually opened up to her mother who contacted the police.
In a statement, the police said the father had "repeatedly warned her that what was going on between them was a secret and that she should not tell anyone and even showed her a kind of 'pact of silence' with his fingers to reinforce the secrecy".
"Locating Diego Darío González Ghersi has been extremely difficult because he resorted to a great physical change to prevent himself from being identified," they added.
In media appeals, the fugitive was described as having short hair, but was donning a beard and had long hair when arrested.
He had also dyed his hair blond, wore coloured contact lenses and height insoles and had covered previous tattoos with bigger ones.
There are seven fugitives on the National Police's 'Most Wanted' list still at large, and anybody with information about their possible whereabouts is asked to contact the police via email: losmasbuscados@policia.es
