Mazarron Council resumes the annual fight against the mosquito problem
ARCHIVED ARTICLE -
The Town Hall of Mazarrón warns that private properties are the most dangerous mosquito hotbeds
Summer is here and so are the mosquitos, and according to the Department of Health in Mazarrón and Lokímica Laboratories stagnant water on private properties is the main focus for the proliferation of mosquito infestation.
For this reason the Council has alerted homeowners and neighbourhood communities of the importance of keeping wet areas such as swimming pools or gardens in healthy conditions
"With the arrival of summer an endemic problem appears for local municipalities, in the shape of plagues of rodents, cockroaches and mosquitoes", as stated by Mazarrón Councillor for Health, Carmen Navarro, at the beginning of a press conference, intended to warn citizens of the importance of collaboration in the private sphere, avoiding the accumulation of water, in the fight against the mosquito plague.
To this end, she was accompanied by Alberto Agulló, Murcia’s Regional Manager of the pest control company Lokímica, who are contracted to treat municipal areas for mosquitos.
The Manager explained the actions they are deploying "We carry out preventative treatment throughout the year involving the subsoil controlling cockroaches and rodents, treatment of gutters to control mosquitoes and incidents reported by citizens in municipal areas". He added, in this last aspect, that the collaboration of residents and visitors is vital as it is "very important to be able to locate where the problem is, since normally, although we do the preventive treatment, there are also problems inside private properties or in non-municipal areas where we cannot act".
The company’s Regional Manager stressed the need to pay special attention in private homes "where you have to be very careful with (water in) pot plants or pets' drinking bowls, changing the water every day" or "pools that are in poor condition, make sure that they are well chlorinated, because left unmaintained they generate many kinds of mosquitoes that can harm the entire urbanisation and nearby areas". In addition, he explained that one of the company’s main focuses is the Bahía area, where after the "rainiest month of May in 80 years" intensive air treatment was carried out in June.
Incidents of mosquito problems, particularly Tiger mosquitoes or other infestations, rats (ratas), cockroaches (cucurachas) etc in municipal areas should be reported to Mazarrón Council by calling in at the Town Hall and filling in a Solicitud genérica, Modelo 001 form, or online using the Linea Verde link. Incidents in other areas such as private homes should be actioned by the homeowner.
Where the problem is in a communal area or abandoned/vacant property the problem should be reported to the appropriate community of owners or management company.
