This initiative is expected to increase the tourist and educational attractions in Mazarrón, allowing residents and visitors to explore and enjoy this unique coastal environment
Mazarrón Town Council’s Department of Tourism, which is headed by Councillor Andrés Aznar, has presented a formal request to the Spanish Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda, as well as to the Port Authority of Cartagena, to seek the transfer of ownership of the use of the area surrounding the Puerto de Mazarrón Lighthouse. The initiative aims to transform this emblematic location into an accessible space for local residents and visitors, promoting a greater understanding of the Bay of Mazarrón, its escarpment and its rich biodiversity.
The Lighthouse, located in the Cabezo del Faro in Puerto de Mazarrón, is currently closed to the public, both the section intended for its main function as a working lighthouse of the Spanish coast, and in those areas that, due to technological advances, have been made redundant. The Town Council’s proposal seeks to take advantage of these areas to develop educational, environmental and tourist activities, for the benefit of both the local population and visitors to Mazarrón and the Region of Murcia coast.
The management process of lighthouses on the Spanish coast comes under the remit of the centralised Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda, with the management being delegated to the port authorities of each autonomous community. In the case of the Puerto de Mazarrón Lighthouse, the responsibility falls on the Port Authority of Cartagena.
The Councillor for Tourism, Andrés Aznar, expressed his conviction that a place as iconic as the Mazarrón Lighthouse should be within the reach of the residents of Mazarrón, as well as those who visit the municipality. “We want to open a new space so that residents and visitors can learn more about the Bay of Mazarrón, its landscape and the richness of its flora and fauna,” declared Aznar.
The Council’s Local Governing Board has lodged a formal request for the transfer of facilities not included in the main activity of the lighthouse for a period of 20 years. This initiative is expected to increase the number of tourist and educational attractions in Mazarrón, allowing residents and visitors alike to explore and enjoy this unique coastal environment. The proposed informative project seeks to enrich the experience of those who come to the Mazarrón Lighthouse, contributing to the cultural and tourist development of the municipality.
