ARCHIVED - Ministry of Transport to invest 7.4M euros improving the busiest section of the A-7 Alicante
ARCHIVED ARTICLE
Work is being carried out on the most saturated stretch of the A-7 between El Campello, Alicante and Elche
Major road surface improvements have begun on the busiest section of the A-7 in Alicante province, a stretch of motorway that is used by around 100,000 vehicles each day, following a Ministry of Transport investment of 7.4 million euros.
Due to the heavy traffic flow, all works are being carried out at night.
The conservation and improvement project will focus on the A-7 Alicante ring road, Elche-Crevillent and Camino de Castilla dual carriageways, along with the N-332 El Campello and Alicante bypass.
The A-70 has an annual average daily intensity of more than 50,000 vehicles along its entire route, but on the section between the access to San Vicente del Raspeig and the University of Alicante and the junction with the A-31, at the height of Mercalicante, it reaches 100,000.
Even during the movement restrictions brought about the pandemic, this particular section remained saturated, according to Ministry data. In July 2019 the number reached 101,617 vehicles per day and only fell to 88,915 in the same month last year.
The motorway improvements, which began this week, are expected to take seven months, and because one lane of the carriageway will have to be closed as repairs are carried out, work will be done from 10pm to 7am from Monday to Friday to reduce disruptions to motorists.
Work will be carried out between kilometre points 506 and 511, Camino de Castilla, and from 511 to 526 Elche-Crevillent. This section also includes part of the AP-7 motorway between kilometre point 703 and the junction with the A-7 at 706. Improvements will also be carried out on the El Campello by-pass on the N-332.
The road surface will be milled and replaced in localised areas, and a new surface will be laid on the entire trunk of the motorway and connecting roads to improve safety conditions and durability.
Eight new traffic gauging stations will also be implemented and the six existing ones will be replaced.
The scheme is one of a number of improvement projects that the Ministry of Transport plans to carry out over the next three years at a cost of 280 million euros.
