ARCHIVED - Morning round up of Spanish coronavirus news
Online gaming publicity partially banned as Spaniards succumb to gambling addiction during the boredom of lockdown
As Spain becomes accustomed to the near-complete economic shutdown which was imposed at the weekend, adding to the lockdown restrictions in response to the coronavirus pandemic which have now been in place for 19 days, much of the focus in the national press is on the economic consequences for the country and how those forced into inactivity are to be compensated for their loss of earnings.
There is a good deal of controversy surrounding the aid provided to the self-employed, which was announced on Tuesday afternoon: too little too late, according to some observers, although on the other hand at least some response has been offered to a situation which has severely affected millions of the country’s workforce since mid-March. At the same time it has to be said that the government has admitted that with hindsight some aspects of the crisis could have been handled differently, but hindsight is a wonderful gift and of course in such an unprecedented situation it is a far easier time for political parties to be in opposition than to be in power!
Meanwhile, the main focus of concern continues to be the “sharp end” of the Covid-19 crisis. In hospitals throughout the country resources are stretched to their limit and beyond, and in the case of the north African enclave of Melilla, which is surrounded on its land borders by Morocco, the navy is sending has sent a hospital ship equipped with 800 beds to ease the situation.
The Galicia is based at the port of Rota in the province of Cádiz and will set sail for Melilla as soon as the necessary medical staff are all on board. Among the on-board facilities are two operating theatres, 8 beds in an intensive care unit, an x-ray unit and various consultancy rooms, and the gesture made by the armed forces comes the day after the first coronavirus fatality was reported in Spain, that of a 58-year-old air force officer stationed at the aerodrome of Cuatro Vientos in Madrid. 208 members of the armed forces have so far tested positive.
In the Costa del Sol town of Nerja, meanwhile, the Guardia Civil have successfully detained a coronavirus patient who escaped from the Hospital La Paz in Madrid. The incident was reported by a family member and it was at around 14.00 on Monday that the man was spotted in Nerja, where he was immediately detained and forcibly admitted to the Hospital Comarcal de la Axarquía in Vélez-Málaga. No details have been made public regarding how he managed to travel from Madrid to the Mediterranean coast, and how many people he may have been in contact with on his journey.
But for most of the population the routine of lockdown is becoming an all too familiar one, and one of the consequences is that people are spending even more time every day watching the television and surfing the internet. This has coincided with an increase in the risk of people becoming addicted to online gaming and gambling sites, and in response the government has introduced a near-total ban on all publicity for such sites on the television, the radio and on sites such as YouTube.
The ban restricts advertising of this kind to between 1.00 and 5.00 in the morning and will remain in place for as long as the state of emergency lasts.
Speaking of which, for those who dare to look ahead to the lifting of the lockdown, the government has announced that when the figures make it feasible to relax the restrictions the process will be a gradual one. Further details will doubtless emerge as and when they become relevant, but with the number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Spain now having risen above 100,000 and another 864 fatalities reported in the daily update on Wednesday morning that is still a along way off for the time being.
Remember: LOCKDOWN MEANS LOCKDOWN. STAY AT HOME. STAY SAFE AND DO YOUR BIT TO REDUCE THE SPREAD OF CORONAVIRUS.

What to do if you are in the Region of Murcia and believe you may have contracted the virus
The regional government has set up a special helpline to supply information to members of the public (900 121212) if they suspect that they may have contracted the virus rather than going straight to hospital or to a medical centre.
Sensible precautions
The advice being issued to members of the public by medical authorities all over the world coincides on the following points:
- Wash hands frequently with either soap and water or a sanitiser gel
- Catch coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues – and throw the tissues away immediately after use before immediately washing your hands!
- If you don’t have a tissue, use your sleeve – and wash the item of clothing used at the next opportunity
- AVOID touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- AVOID close contact with people who are unwell
- Don´t panic!
