ARCHIVED - Murcia city makes 800 parking spaces free to minimise pollution during Saharan dust
The city council has taken measures to ensure motorists and citizens remain safe during this period of poor air quality
The arrival of a huge mass of air from Africa has brought with it Saharan dust which is staining the Spanish sky – and many cars – orange. In Murcia capital city, the City Council has activated its Level 3 alert for atmospheric pollution.
In the automatic air pollution control and monitoring stations of San Basilio and Alcantarilla, both belonging to the air quality zone of the central Murcia district, the daily average value of 100 µg/m³ of PM10 particles has been exceeded significantly, giving a value of 144 µg/m3 and 141 µg/m³, respectively.
That’s why the city has activated its ‘Protocol of measures to be adopted during episodes of atmospheric pollution by nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide, ozone and particulate matter (Pm10)’.
This basically entails a series of actions to mitigate the negative impact of the Saharan dust on health and property of Murcia citizens.
Driving and traffic
Murcia City Local Police will ensure that traffic flow is as smooth as possible, avoiding traffic jams in the city and neighbouring districts and that no prolonged or unnecessary stops are made with the engine running, which will cut down on fumes that make the air quality even worse.
Likewise, warnings will be sent to the town councils of neighbouring municipalities and possible industries involved, and information will be passed on to risk groups, health and hospital centres, old people’s homes, day centres and sports centres.
The protocol also provides for the stoppage of works involving emissions into the air until the protocol is deactivated (Local Police and the Service responsible for inspecting works and activities).
The Traffic Control Room has put in place the publication of specific messages aimed at drivers on the panels of the access roads: ‘Atmospheric alert’; ‘Avoid accessing the centre’; ‘Use the park and ride’; and ‘Drive efficiently’.
Vehicles over 10 years old are requested not to access the inner area of the city, including Ronda Oeste, Ronda Sur, Avenida Los Dolores, Avenida Miguel Indurain, Avenida Reino de Murcia and Avenida Doctor Pedro Guillén, because these cars are the ones that pollute the most.
The local police will also advise people, especially the elderly and children, who are in parks and green areas doing physical exercise not to do so, at their own risk.
In sports centres, the public address system will be used to inform and advise visitors not to do physical activity and workers will remain alert to any emergency situation that may arise among users and the nearest Municipal Police or Health Centre will be quickly notified.
Free parking
There are several free use car parks in and around the city: Nueva Condomina, Thader Shopping Centre, Palacio de los Deportes, Auditorium and congress centre, Carrefour Infante, Barriomar, "La Molinera", Malecón and Ronda Norte.
As well as these, the city council is temporarily establishing the free use of around 800 spaces in park-and-ride car parks to minimise pollution.
This measure will be in force at least until Thursday March 17. The car parks where parking will be free are the Atocha, Fuenteblanca, Justicia and Arrixaca car parks.
