The Region of Murcia has registered 587 new positive cases in the past 25 hours which is two fewer than the previous day, but sadly one Covid-related death has been reported, the first since
a 29-year-old man lost his life on Monday, the youngest Covid-related fatality since the pandemic began. The victim, according to the Ministry of Health, was an 81-year-old man from the municipality of Murcia.
This fatality brings the number of reported deaths up to 1,611 and the total number of people infected with Covid in the Region since the beginning of the pandemic stands at 121,327.
Of the 587 new cases, 138 correspond to the municipality of Murcia, 94 to Cartagena, 45 to Molina de Segura , 29 to Lorca, 24 to Yecla, 20 to Mazarrón and 19 to Torre Pacheco. The remainder of the infections are spread across the different municipalities in smaller quantities.
The number of active cases stands at 4,065, which is 230 more than the previous day and is the highest level since February. Unfortunately, the pressure on medical staff continues its upswing as the number of hospitalised patients increases by 10 in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of admissions to 92. Of these, 13 are currently in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
In response to the growing number of infections, the Murcian Health Service (SMS) announced on Thursday, July 22 that it has decided to once again
suspend visits and restrict accompaniments to patients to hospitals in the Region. The managing director of the SMS, Francisco José Ponce, said that the reason for the restrictions is to limit the number of infections caused by visitors bringing the virus into Murcia’s hospitals, which are already under huge pressure.
On the plus side, 115,651 people in Murcia have overcome the virus to date, and the number of daily tests carried out continues to increase also, with 1,261,113 PCR and antigen tests completed to date.
In Spain overall, the latest data published by the Ministry of Health on Thursday evening show that 286,223 Covid vaccines were administered in just one day, taking the total since the campaign began to 52,879,267.
This weekend mass testings are being undertaken in several municipalities to try and detect positive cases amongst the younger members of the population.
Vaccinations: As of Wednesday, July 21, a total of 1,580,276 doses of the coronavirus vaccine have been administered in the region. To date, 730,411 people have been fully vaccinated.
These two images show the worst-affected municipalities in the region, based on the percentage of cases per 100,000 of population. The regional average is now 386; just a few weeks ago Murcia had dropped below 50.
