ARCHIVED - Murcia Feria 2022: Your complete guide to all the activities happening at the Murcia fair this September
ARCHIVED ARTICLE
See our full list of what’s on, when and where at the Murcia City fair this September
The countdown has begun for one of the most anticipated festivals of the year in Murcia, the Feria de Murcia 2022 fair, which will be held from September 1 to 13.
Murcia City Council has announced its full programme of what’s happening at for the festivities, which includes the setting up of the traditional Huertos del Malecón temporary restaurants, the Moors and Christians camp and the fairground attractions, which are all on a 2-for-1 deal, as well as the celebration of the pilgrimage of La Fuensanta.
There will also be various concerts, a salsa workshop, basketball championship, go-kart rides and funfair attractions along the riverside, plus additional non-official events taking place for an additional five days after the end of the fair.
What is the Feria of Murcia?
The Feria is an autumn event which began life as a livestock fair, a place where farmers could sell their stock and purchase farming goods. This naturally meant a lot of money would change hands, so it also attracted those who were determined to help the farmers to spend their earnings on pleasurable pursuits. Vendors of luxury goods also came along to persuade the well off to part with their savings, and the Feria de Murcia grew out of this commercial activity.
The events start with the descent of the Virgen de la Fuensanta from her sanctuary in the mountains just outside Murcia, which traditionally takes place on the first Thursday of September (this year 1st September). In the past this coincided with the opening of the livestock fair, but since 2015 it has been decided not to hold the cattle fair.
