ARCHIVED - Murcia has the lowest rate of vaccination in Spain: Covid update September 2
ARCHIVED ARTICLE
Despite the low jab rate, the effects of the pandemic continue to ease off in the Region of Murcia
To date, the Region of Murcia has administered 223,145 coronavirus vaccinations, 84.5% of the total doses received by the community. This rate is sadly four and a half points lower than the Spanish average, which sits at 89%, and is the lowest of all the autonomous regions.
Even so, the pandemic data has improved again this week with hospitalisations and ICU admissions decreasing. Daily infections have dropped and although the downward trend of the incidence rate has slowed somewhat, this is only to be expected as the latest wave of the health crisis nears its end.
Coronavirus infections
The Region of Murcia has registered a total of 172 cases of coronavirus since the last update at the beginning of the week, 188 of which were reported on Wednesday August 31, which brings the overall number of infections since the beginning of the pandemic to 453,986.
Of the total cases, 82,952 have been diagnosed in people over the age of 60.
Cumulative incidence rate
The latest data provided by the regional health authorities on Wednesday show that the 7-day cumulative incidence rate has dropped even further to stand at 85.96 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
The average incidence over a two-week period also reflects this slowdown, albeit it a gentler pace, decreasing once more from 206.67 cases at the beginning of the week to 205.45 today.
Hospitalisations have taken another welcome dip, dropping from 147 patients to just 116. There has also been a noticeable improvement in intensive care occupation this week, with the number of chronically ill patients falling from 10 to eight.
Two more Covid-related fatalities have been registered, bringing the overall death toll since the start of the health crisis to 2,421.
Covid testing
The Region of Murcia has carried out 3,129,889 PCR and antigen coronavirus detection tests.
Vaccination data
Since the last update, 91.84% of the entire population of the Murcia Region has had a least one dose. In addition, 84.87% of people are now double jabbed.
However, the rate of vaccination compared to the number of doses received is well below the national average of 89% and Murcia actually has the lowest level of full coverage of all the autonomous communities. This is particularly striking when the Region is compared to the likes of the Balearic Islands, with 93.5% of the population double jabbed, or Andalusia, with 93.4%.
In Spain, more than 7.5 million vaccines have been administered out of the 8.5 million doses received.
Data at a glance from Wednesday August 31:
Total positives diagnosed in the last 24-hour period: 88
