ARCHIVED - Murcia municipality street markets don´t want to open but those in La Unión do
Yesterday Cartagena confirmed partial re-opening of its street markets
On Monday 11th phase 1 of the de-escalation process begins, bringing greater liberty for those of us who have endured eight weeks of total lockdown and relief for businesses who have struggled to remain solvent during this period.
Street markets have always been an essential element of Spanish social culture and are a much-loved feature of daily life enjoyed by tourists as well as residents, selling a wide range of fresh produce, foods, household goods and clothing, usually at very attractive prices!
Phase 1 permits street markets to resume trading at 25% of their normal density, but it is discretionary for each local municipal council to decide whether they want to open their street markets or not.
Cartagena announced yesterday that it would be opening the FOOD STALLS ONLY in its year-round markets from 11th May (click to see the article which also links to detailed info about the day on which each of the Cartagena municipality markets takes place and where they are, bearing in mind that the Cartagena municipality runs around the edge of the Mar Menor so includes los Belones and Cabo de Palos and then along the Mediterranean coast to La Azohía and Isla Plana).
La Unión
La Unión has announced that it too will be opening what it is now calling a “fruit market” but in a new location, in la Plaza de Los Sánchez, alongside the municipal sports stadium, the Polideportivo Municipal.
This will be opening on Tuesday 12th May during the morning.
Shoppers will be asked to maintain social distancing and form orderly queues, not to touch the produce and if possible, wear a mask. Stalls will be appropriately distanced and vendors must use disinfectant gel and gloves. The Policia Local will be present to ensure there is no queue jumping and social distancing is maintained.
The town hall is planning to re-open 50% of the remaining “normal “stalls on Tuesday 19th May in the normal Tuesday market location in Calle Mayor, the market in the outlying district of Roche on the 18th May and the Portmán market on the 23rd May.
Murcia city municipality vendors choose NOT to open their street markets
At the moment, the market traders working in the Murcia city municipality, which includes not only the City of Murcia but also areas such as Corvera, Sucina and Gea y Truyols, are not happy about the prospect of opening at 25% of their capacity next week.
They feel that the proposed system of holding a draw to decide which vendors will occupy the 25% of stalls which will be permitted to open in order to avoid overcrowding, is “discriminatory” and at the moment have said that they would prefer to wait for a couple of weeks until the markets can fully re-open.
The traders and town hall have reviewed plans being put in place in not only other areas of the Murcia Region but also in the neighbouring provinces of Alicante and Almería, which include plans to limit the numbers of people allowed into the street at any given time, not allow the public to touch the produce, maintain social distancing between the public queueing to be served etc, and feel that with the high temperatures in Murcia, clients will also be unhappy about having to stand in queues at 11am in the morning in full sun, so they will wait to see if the government modifies the conditions it has laid down, restricting to markets to 25% of their normal size for the two weeks of phase 1. This situation may of course, change.
Some readers have already expressed their own fears about the potential contagions of a crowded market and have said they too will wait a little longer before going back to a street market, whereas other readers are practically jumping for joy at the prospect of once again being able to buy a wider range of fresh produce than is sold in most supermarkets, and from Monday being allowed to drag their better half along for the ride and to carry their shopping as from Monday more than one person can travel in a vehicle if they are from the same household!.
Please be patient if seeking info about your own nearest local market; there are 45 municipalities in this region, each with its own local council and information will be published gradually as each council decides what will happen in its own local municipality from Monday onwards.
