ARCHIVED - Murcia police sell guns at auction for 10 euros
A total of 328 pistols and shotguns are being auctioned off at the Murcia Civil Guard Headquarters next Tuesday in what will be the last auction of its kind
The Guardia Civil in Murcia is holding an auction next Tuesday, March 29, to sell shotguns, pistols and other weapons to the highest bidder. This is not the first time the Spanish police have auctioned off weapons; in fact, it’s an annual occurrence to free up storage space and raise some funds along the way.
According to the Weapons Regulation law in Spain, the pistols and shotguns that make their way into the hands of police, whether by being confiscated from those not authorised to have them or by being handed in voluntarily, must have a new legal owner within a year or they will be destroyed.
The latest exhibition has 328 lots to be auctioned off, in the form of closed bidding, but there are actually fewer weapons than other years: in 2021 there were 565 lots, while in 2020 there were 506.
This is the last year that the auction will be held in-person at the Murcia police headquarters, the Comandancia de la Guardia Civil on Avenida Juan de Borbón in Murcia capital city, as the next one will be online and only for antique dealers and collectors.
Brigadier Rafael Torrano, head of the Intervention of Weapons, said, “Next year there will no longer be an auction as such: it will be online.”
By changing the rules, the future virtual auction will be much more restricted as only antique, historic and artistic weapons will be on display.
Guns for sale from 10 euros
For this year, though, the weapons on sale range in price from ten to one thousand euros, and can be bought by anyone with a Spanish firearm licence. At both the bottom and top end of this scale are shotguns.
The fact that one shotgun has a starting price of ten euros and another very similar one has a starting price of one thousand euros is due to the fact that the owners of the guns are the ones who set the price. The pieces are not appraised by police experts.
The person who offers the piece for auction is obliged to put a price on it. If the owner does not set a price, it is the Guardia Civil itself that sets the price. However, there are those who prefer their weapon to be destroyed and become scrap metal. That is why they put such a high price on it: so that nobody bids for it and takes the cheapest one. That is the reason why two very similar shotguns have such different price labels.
As a curiosity, there are several black powder revolvers, like those carried by bandits, dating from the beginning of the 20th century.
In total, there are 85 small arms (38 pistols and 47 revolvers) and 243 long arms (219 shotguns, 15 carbines, 8 rifles and one special category). All of them have been voluntarily given to police by their owners, either because the original owner died and their heirs didn’t want the guns, or because the arms licences expired or were revoked.
Weapons that do not find a new owner are doomed to destruction. “They will go to a foundry, they will be put in a pot, with more iron, and melted down to make roof beams,” says Brigadier Torrano.
The lots will remain on display in the premises of the Murcia Command post until Friday March 25 from 9am to 1pm, while the auction itself will take place on Tuesday March 29 from 9am in the same place.
