Caravaca de la Cruz will host a stage finish in the Vuelta Ciclista a España 2023 in September
The world-renowned Vuelta a España, a three-week cycling race scheduled to take place in Spain between August 26 and September 17, will once again travel through the Region of Murcia this year. Only on this occasion, the Region will host a start and end stage of the competition.
On Sunday September 3, international cyclists will set off from Cartagena and make their way to the day's end stage in Caravaca de la Cruz. Specifically, the finish line will be located at the Barquilla-Collado de la Cruz mountain pass, a first category stage, which has never before been part of the national event.
The day before, a day's ride is scheduled between Denia and the Xorret de Catí pass in Alicante province.
Caravaca de la Cruz has already been the setting for two Vuelta a España stage finishes: in 2004 (San Vicente del Raspeig, Alicante to Caravaca) a race that was won by David Zabriskie; and in 2009, a regional race in which cyclist Alejandro Valverde was victorious.
On two occasions, Caravaca was the scene of a start: in 2010 for a stage between the town and Murcia city that went through the whole region with Thor Hushovd pipping other cyclists to the winning post; and in 2017 when the 10th stage started in Caravaca and finished in ElPozo Alimentación after climbing the Collado Bermejo. This race covered a distance of 164.80 km and was won by Italian Matteo Trentin.
The Tour of Spain 2023 will start in Barcelona on August 26 and finish in Madrid on September 17.
Two days will be held in Catalonia, a team time trial and a half-mountain time trial starting in Mataró and finishing in Barcelona's Olympic Stadium after climbing Montjuic. The race will climb to Andorra and then descend along the Mediterranean with stages in Castellón, Valencia and Alicante.
After the day's finish in Caravaca, the peloton will head to Valladolid for an individual time trial on Tuesday September 5. On Friday September 8, a finish at the mythical Tourmalet, in French territory, is planned, before descending to Pamplona and after the second day of descent, into Asturias on Monday September 11 with ascents of the Lagos de Covadonga and the Angliru.
On Saturday September 16, a legendary stage will be held in the Sierra de Guadarrama mountain range to finish the following day in Madrid.
