The 8-month-old American Bully-Staffordshire crosses were not properly registered with authorities
A tragic attack took place recently in the Region of Murcia when a 96-year-old woman from the municipality of Alguazas died at the Morales Meseguer hospital this weekend as a result of the serious bites she received last Tuesday October 24 from two dogs that attacked her in the area called El Paraje.
Josefa, who lived in the central Murcia municipality, was attacked by her neighbour’s young dogs when they escaped from the house next door. The owner of the two dogs – which were puppies aged just 8 months – was not at home at the time of the attack. Police sources indicate that the animals bit the woman all over her body, but especially on her arms where they caused injuries that ended up being lethal.
Paramedics who turned up in an ambulance were unable to gain access to the victim until relatives of the dogs’ owner showed up and managed to calm them down.
After four days in the hospital, Josefa sadly died.
The case comes just days after another person, aged 27, lost their life when attacked by a pack of dogs in the northwestern Spanish town of Zamora.
A Guardia Civil investigation into the Murcia dog attack has revealed that the animals were not properly registered and had not been vaccinated or microchipped, despite being a mixture of breeds that are considered potentially dangerous – the American Bully and the American Staffordshire Terrier.
Not only that, but it appears that two other dogs belonging to the same owner escaped from the property just 72 hours after the fatal attack. These animals are the mother and brother of the two dogs that bit Josefa.
As explained by the Spanish National Association for Animal Rehabilitation and Protection (Anerpa), the two dogs are now “under anti-rabies observation”, a form of isolation where they must spend 21 days.
After that time, the dogs may either be given back to their owner or put down, depending on a court decision.
