At least two new motorhome and camping grounds are in the works along the southern coastline of the Region, but one of them is being opposed by environmentalists as it is being planned for construction within a nature reserve.
A new campsite with 600 places for motorhomes to park and tents to pitch up is set to open this summer on the stretch of coastline between Calnegre (Lorca) and Percheles (Cañada de Gallego, Mazarrón), facing onto the Playa de Parazuelos beach.
Heavy machinery is currently in place to level the ground and prepare the new Lorca-Mazarrón camping ground, which is located near the existing Taray Camper Park and is expected to be ready in time for at least part of the summer tourist season 2023.
Meanwhile, around 20 kilometres away, another camping resort is planned for construction by the Torre Cope tower near the Playa de la Ensenada de la Fuente beach in Águilas.
The project, promoted by the Alicante-based Marjal group, owner of the Alannia chain, is to be built on an area of some 80,000 square metres located inside the Regional Park of Calnegre and Cabo Cope, in the vicinity of the Torre Cope tower and very close to the fossil dunes of the coastline adjoining the foothills of Cabo Cope.
Local environmental campaign groups including ANSE, WWF and Ecologistas en Acción have opposed the campsite on the grounds that it contravenes natural protection laws and would threaten the conservation of the 16th-century tower, and important local historical monument.
They are holding a “March in Defence of Calnegre and Cabo Cope” on Saturday April 22, coinciding with the commemoration of Earth Day, to protest against the new camping resort and to call for the creation of an action plan for the protection of the Regional Park.
The protest walk will start at 10.30am from the Playa Calabardina beach and end at the Torre de Cope tower, and everyone is welcome to join.
