ARCHIVED - New pandemic record set as Spain reports 61,422 Covid-19 cases over the weekend
The relaxation of restrictions on social gatherings over Christmas takes its toll
The adverse effects of increased socializing over the Christmas holidays are now becoming clear in the latest figures regarding the spread of the third wave of Covid-19 in Spain, and on Monday the Ministry of Health reported a further 61,422 confirmed cases, the highest yet recorded in a single update.
These cases relate to the period between Friday evening when the last set of data was presented and Monday evening.Click here for source data.
In addition, another 401 people died after testing positive for coronavirus, bringing the official death toll since the pandemic reached this country to 51,874, while the number of infections has risen to 2,111,782.
The 14-day accumulated incidence rate across the country currently stands at 435 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, representing a sharp rise since Friday when it was at 350, and in consequence the pressure on the health services continues to increase. At present 26 per cent of occupied intensive care beds in Spain are accounted for by Covid patients, and as many as 16 per cent of all PCR tests are returning positive results.
This means that all three of the above indicators are above the established “emergency” thresholds, which are a 14-day incidence rate of 250, intensive care occupancy of 25 per cent and PCR positivity of 15 per cent.
During his press conference on Monday Fernando Simón, the Director of the Coordination Centre for Health Alerts and Emergencies of the Ministry of Health, was clearly upset at the latest developments, attributing them to the relaxation of restrictions on social gatherings over the festive season. “We had a more relaxed Christmas than we should have and what we are now seeing is a clear increase in the number of cases”, he stated, adding that the country will have to wait until the re-introduction of stricter measures takes effect before it becomes possible to observe any improvement in the situation.

This, Sr Simón explains, will not begin to be the case until next week, and in the meantime it must be hoped that intensive care units are not overwhelmed: in the regions of the Comunidad Valenciana and La Rioja, the intensive care Covid occupancy rate is over 40 per cent.
On the other hand, the fact that the vaccination campaign has begun at least provides what Sr Simón describes as “hope on the horizon”, but people should not imagine that the effect will be immediate. He estimates that not until the end of February or early March will the immunization program have a significant effect and warns that until then various “complicated weeks” lie ahead.
More restrictions in the Autonomous Regions
Meanwhile, the 17 regional governments of Spain are beginning to reintroduce tighter restrictions and lockdowns. In Andalucía the latest daily update reports 4,896 new cases of coronavirus, four times more than the previous day, and in response the “Junta” has announced that travel into and out of the region is prohibited.
At the same time, throughout the eight provinces of the region bars and restaurants are being obliged to close earlier in the evening and the start of the night-time curfew has been brought forward from 23.00 to 22.00, while the possibility of even stricter controls being introduced by the weekend has not been ruled out.
Within the region of Madrid 41 “basic health areas” and 14 municipalities are now under full confinement, a lockdown which affects around 1.2 million inhabitants, in the Region of Murcia bars and restaurants are closed in 90 per cent of the 45 municipalities including the regional capital, and in the Balearics it has been announced that as of this Wednesday social gatherings are to be restricted to immediate family members in both Mallorca and Ibiza.
Similarly, in Asturias closing time will be brought forward to 20.00 for all bars, restaurants and shops as of this Thursday, at which point the curfew will be brought forward to 22.00 and the municipality of Grado will enter confinement. The regional government has published a decree prolonging these restrictions and those on culture, sport, events, recreational activities, accommodation and education for 14 days.
As for the immunization campaign, another 350,000 doses of the Pfizer vaccine were delivered to Spain on Monday as planned, despite the difficulties in supplying them to Madrid due to the historic snowfall in the national capital.
