Infections rebound in Spain and the incidence rate is on the rise once more
Most of Europe is experiencing an upswing in coronavirus infections at the moment and all of the data without exception is on the rise in Spain. This week, the Ministry of Health registered 20,000 more Covid cases and as a result, the cumulative incidence rate in people over the age of 60 is also climbing, approaching 800 cases once more.
Coronavirus infections
There has been a huge rebound in infections over the last seven days, with 68,186 cases reported to the Ministry of Health in Spain on Friday June 24.
This is a large increase on the 48,272 cases registered on the same day the previous week and brings the total number of infections since the beginning of the pandemic to 12,681,820.
Cumulative incidence rate
As daily infections rise, so does the 14-day cumulative incidence rate, and this figure now stands at 755.71 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, which is an upswing of 100 points in just one week.
In the past fortnight, a total of 93,089 positive cases have been recorded in people over the age of 60.
The incidence rate is creeping up in most regions, and three communities (Madrid, the Canary Islands and La Rioja) have once again exceeded the 1000 case barrier.
Andalucía remains at the bottom of the list with just 257.40 cases per 100,000 while the Region of Murcia has seen a considerable increase to more than 500 cases.
The Valencian Community remains below the Spanish national average, with 495.85 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
Hospitalisations and fatalities
There are currently 8,205 patients hospitalised for Covid throughout Spain, up from 7,793 on Tuesday June 21. As of Friday, 388 people were being treated from more serious conditions in the country’s ICUs, up from 361.
The occupancy rate of both general beds and ICU places have experienced a slight increase in the last week, to stand at 6.67% and 4.38%, respectively.
In Friday’s report, a further 195 Covid-related fatalities were reported, bringing the overall death toll since the start of the health crisis to 107,799.
Covid testing
Between June 14 and 20, the autonomous communities have carried out 162,566 diagnostic tests on people over 60 years of age.
This has resulted in a positivity rate of 34.83% which is a far cry from the 5% recommended by the WHO to consider the spread of the virus under control.
Vaccination data
Since the last update, 39,099,907 people over the age of 12 in Spain have been double jabbed, which represents 92.7% of the population. In addition, 39,240,619 people (93%) have had at least one vaccination.
