October 20 Run or walk to raise money for breast cancer in Puerto Lumbreras

There is a race-walk to raise money to fight breast cancer in Puerto Lumbreras on Sunday October 20 and everyone is invited along to take part.

The charity walk starts at 10am in the Plaza de la Constitution, where a speech will be given, and then goes towards to the town’s Parish church, where a service will be held at 12 midday in solidarity with those suffering from breast cancer.

Town Mayor María de Los Ángeles Túnez has explained that the ‘Pink March against cancer in Puerto Lumbreras’ is a “traditional event with which society fights for the visibility of this disease, calls for prevention and asks for more research”.

The mayor continued, “This is an activity in which the Puerto Lumbreras City Council collaborates in the organisation with the headquarters of the Spanish Association Against Cancer of our municipality and in which we will continue to collaborate because making this disease visible is essential to help the thousands of women who suffer from this disease.”

The march will be held in commemoration of the World Day Against Breast Cancer which takes place on October 19. Breast cancer is the most common cancer that affects women around the world. In Murcia alone 1,016 new cases were detected last year.

María de los Ángeles Túnez wanted to “insist on the importance of prevention and early diagnosis, which is why annual check-ups are very necessary because with early detection the cure rate and survival rate is increasingly higher” and has “invited all of Lumbreras society to participate in this solidarity march as a reminder of the commitment of all of society in the fight against breast cancer”.

The municipality of Puerto Lumbreras lies in the south-west of the Region of Murcia on the border with Andalucía, and features a landscape which alternates between mountains such as the Cabezo de la Jara (1,242 metres) and the fertile lowlands of the Guadalentín valley, where leaf vegetables and flowers are among the crops grown.

The location of the town on the main route between Murcia and the Andalucían cities of Granada and Seville Puerto Lumbreras Tourist Office has made it a logical stopping point for travellers for many centuries. Visitors are attracted by the castle, the restored cave homes below it which have been converted into exhibition rooms and the astronomical observatory in the Cabezo de la Jara.

The Tourist Information Office of Puerto Lumbreras is unusual in that it is located not in the town centre, close to the castle and the cave houses, but on the edge of the built-up area. This may seem strange, but it is also logical, as its location is on the roundabout of the exit from the motorway as it rings the town to the north, and the office is thus easy to find for visitors to Puerto Lumbreras.

Make sure you're in the right hand slip lane as the entrance to the tourist office is immediately to the right hand side.

The tourist office contains a full selection of maps and leaflets about the municipality and its points of interest.
