The cumulative incidence rate in the Valencian Community approaches 1,000 cases
With the holiday season in full swing in Spain, the coronavirus pandemic is refusing to relinquish its grip and the Valencian Community has imposed a series of local restrictions, such as expanding the use of the Covid passport and closing a number of beaches on Christmas Day in order to slow down the spread. Despite this, infections and the all-important incidence rate continue to steadily increase.
Coronavirus infections
The regional health authorities in the Valencian Community have notified 10,889 new Covid infections on Monday December 27, which brings the total number of infections since the beginning of the pandemic to 606,321.
The new cases by province are 978 in Castellón (67,148 in total); 3,514 in Alicante (219,180) and 6,397 in Valencia (319,983).
The number of unassigned cases remains at one.
Cumulative incidence rate
The 14-day incidence now stands at 952.53 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. This is an increase from 813.63 infections registered on Friday but still below the national average of 1,206.21.
Hospitalisations
Valencian hospitals currently have 951 people admitted, 173 of them being treated for more serious symptoms in the ICU: 166 in the province of Castellón, 25 in the ICU; 295 in the province of Alicante, 63 of them in the ICU; and 490 in the province of Valencia, 85 in the ICU.
On the other hand, 9,781 patients have now been discharged, meaning that a total of 561,411 people have overcome the virus in the Valencian Community.
By province, the discharges are distributed as follows: 62,264 in Castellón, 203,723 in Alicante and 295,368 in Valencia.
The total number of unassigned discharges remains at 56.
Fatalities
Seven Covid-related deaths have been reported since the last update, bringing the overall death toll in the community to 8,071: 903 in the province of Castellon, 3,102 in Alicante and 4,066 in Valencia.
The deceased are four women aged between 67 and 95 years and three men, aged between 42 and 87.
Active cases
According to the data released on December 27, there are currently 48,271 active cases in the Valencian Community.
Covid outbreaks
Since the last update, no outbreak of 10 or more cases has been reported.
Vaccination data
A total of 4,054,572 people have now received two doses of the vaccination, which represents 90.3% of the overall population of the region.
Omicron
A report published by Spain’s Ministry of Health on Monday December 27 has revealed that the Omicron coronavirus variant was responsible for 23% of infections diagnosed between December 13 and 19. Omicron was the dominant strain in both Madrid and the Canary Islands on the same week, representing 55.4% and 54.8% of all cases respectively.
