ARCHIVED - Package of improvements to the poor sewage network in Cartagena will cost 9.5M euros
ARCHIVED ARTICLE
Three-quarters of the proposed works are earmarked for Mar Manor and La Manga
A 9.5-million-euro package of projects to completely replace Cartagena's "poor sewage system" has been put together by the local authority and forwarded to the Spanish central government in a bid to secure the necessary funding.
The proposals include a total overheal in Mar de Cristal and Islas Menores, as well as the sewage system's complete renovation in El Carmolí, Los Urrutias and Gran Vía de La Manga.
Cartagena's Councillor for Infrastructures, Diego Ortega, confirmed this week that he has sent the Ministry for Ecological Transition a list of 19 initiatives which he considers "necessary to prevent the torrential rains from causing problems in 13 localities". Fifteen of the works are earmarked for towns along the Mar Menor and in La Manga.
The plan includes repairs to sewage networks in poor condition, comprehensive works in urban areas and urbanisations that lack sewage networks, as well as the improvement of pumping and impulsion systems.
The total cost is more than double the 4.1 million the council originally estimated, which is why the proposals have been put forward for state subsidies.
The plan distinguishes 11 'high priority' infrastructures, valued at 2.5 million, which include the renovation of the sewage network in Cala del Pino, in Calle Faro de Ribadeo in La Manga, and in calles José Ventura, Vespasiano, Alfonso Vargas and Umberto Patón in La Puebla.
There are also three proposals to carry out improvements to the seweage network in Los Nietos, in calles Nuestra Señora de Los Ángeles, Vista Bella and Isla Rondelle.
Finally, the council wants to create a diversion of the sewerage system between Islas Menores and the pumping station at Lengua de Vaca, "which has also been causing problems".
Ironically, the "lowest priority proposals" are the most costly investments, such as new impulsion systems for the drainage of the pumping stations of La Palma (2.3 million euros), La Puebla (1.7 million) and between Pozo Estrecho and the treatment plant of La Aljorra (1.5 million).
The extension of a similar installation between Las Sirenas and Mar de Cristal, and a device to prevent discharges into the Mar Menor from the Los Cubanitos urbanisation and in Playa Honda are also included in the plans.
