Orihuela's PANGEA Agency, a department in charge of assisting migrants in social need, saw its resources stretched significantly in 2022, with the number of foreigners requiring support surging by more than a third.

Councillor for Immigration, Angel Luis Muñoz Grau, released the agency's data on International Migrants Day (December 18), and revealed that 782 migrants were assisted this year, up 37% on the 561 people who were helped in 2021.

By origin, people from 45 different nationalities were assisted, in particular Morocco (190), Ukraine (158) and Colombia (97), as well as Algeria, Russia, Ecuador, Bolivia, Peru, Honduras, Georgia, Mali, Venezuela and the United Kingdom.

Of the total number of agency users, the majority (61.5%) were aged between 25 and 45 years old, and two thirds had secondary education or higher.

The Councillor for Immigration stressed that, given Russia's invasion of Ukraine, specific support has been given to those who were forced to flee the war-torn country.

"With regard to displaced people from Ukraine, a total of 140 family units were assisted, mainly in Orihuela and Orihuela Costa. This involved making a first reception and developing a social integration plan for each family, which included learning Spanish, access to registration, access to public health, information on regularisation processes through the temporary protection system, access to schooling for children and management of financial aid where appropriate," he explained.

Orihuela has a population of 84,455, of whom 31,243 are non-Spanish, meaning more than a third of the municipality's inhabitants are foreigners.

The PANGEA agency was established to care for migrants in a situation of social need, specifically providing advisory services for access to regularisation processes, renewal of residence cards, family reunification, information on political asylum processes or temporary protection (as in the case of Ukrainian citizens), homologation of foreign qualifications, access to health, social services and public education, amongst others.
