Almost two million passengers passed through airports on the Costa del Sol in September
As international travel takes off following a relaxation of travel restrictions, airports in Andalucía recorded double the number of passengers in September, with a footfall of 1,988,693 travellers – up 197% on the same period last year – with 21,893 flights.
And between January and September of this year, airports in the region accounted for almost 8.2 million passengers travelling to and from Spain, according to airport operator Aena.
The highest movement during the first nine months of the year was recorded at Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport, which reached 5.5 million passengers,a year-on-year increase of 24.2%.
In September, 1.34 million passengers passed through its terminals, which is a staggering increase of 265.5% on the same month in 2020.
Behind Malaga is San Pablo Seville Airport with 2.02 million passengers from January to September, just 0.3% up on the same period last year, but in terms of September alone, 461,242 people arrived or departed from the airport, a healthier 159% increase on 2020.
Meanwhile, Federico García Lorca Granada-Jaén Airport registered 316,340 passengers from January to September, (down 5.9%), of which 66,329 (82.9%) travelled in September, whilst Jerez de la Frontera Airport in Cádiz recorded 284,743 passengers, (an increase of 53.4%), with 71,717 users in the latter month (up 311.9%).
Almería, with 50,616 passengers, saw an increase in September of 164.2% compared to 2020, whilst Córdoba reported 407 passengers (down 54.3%), and 3,450 passengers passed through Algeciras heliport, an increase of 38.8%:
Málaga also topped the table for the most flights last month, with 12,096, 94.1% more than in the same period in 2020, while Seville recorded 4,816 operations (up 42.4%).
Elsewhere in the region: Jerez recorded 3,123 operations in September (down 27.8%); Granada-Jaén, 1,041 (up 20.8%); and Almería, 817 operations, (up 25.3%).
The data for flights in Córdoba and Algeciras heliport relates to the first nine months of the year with 718 operations (down 10.3%), and 298 (up 21.1%) respectively.
