Proposal for new caravan area near central Cartagena
Political parties have called for a structured response to the growing motorhome tourism in the municipality
The opposition party in Cartagena’s city council is pushing for the creation of a new municipal area for motorhomes near the city centre. MC Cartagena councillor Isabel García has announced that she will present an initiative in the next plenary session aimed at improving parking options and enhancing the experience of motorhome tourists, while addressing the concerns of local residents.
“The growing motorhome tourism in the municipality is an issue that should get a clear and direct response,” García stated. Her proposal seeks to promote an organised and sustainable approach to this form of tourism, which has increased significantly in recent years, particularly among European visitors drawn to Cartagena’s historical heritage and scenic coastline.
García argues that the lack of a designated motorhome area near the city centre has led to planning difficulties and conflicts between tourists and residents. To resolve this, MC Cartagena is calling for municipal technicians to conduct a study identifying a suitable location for a new motorhome area close to the centre.
This space would be specifically designated for motorhomes and equipped with essential services such as drinking water, sewage disposal, electric charging points and rest areas.
In addition to the new facility, García is advocating for an awareness campaign to educate motorhome users about the importance of using authorised areas and avoiding disorganised parking. This initiative would include informative signage throughout the city to ensure compliance and ease of access to designated spaces.
MC Cartagena is also urging the local government to streamline the approval processes for licences related to both public and private motorhome areas. “It is essential to offer practical and sustainable solutions that improve the visitor experience while protecting the quality of life of our residents,” García emphasised.
The proposal aims to create a balance between boosting tourism and maintaining order within the municipality. As motorhome tourism continues to grow, the opposition party believes that proactive measures must be taken to ensure both visitors and locals benefit from well-structured and accessible facilities.
