The multi-year plan aims to give more “certainty” to Murcia agricultural workers between now and 2029
The Region of Murcia has announced a new aid plan worth 18.6 million euros to support the struggling local agricultural sector. The plan, known as the Additional Multiannual Own Financing Plan, aims to provide “certainty and security” to farmers and ranchers in the Region.
Under the plan, funding will be allocated until 2029 to support various initiatives and it will begin this year with an exceptional allocation of 600,000 euros, exceeding the budget for 2024.
This amount will be used to support health defence associations and agricultural insurance, with a designated figure of 200,000 euros and 400,000 euros, respectively.
In addition, and over the coming years, the regional government has strengthened aid for protecting birdlife (3,350,000 euros), preserving and enhancing habitats and traditional agricultural practices (3,900,000 euros) and promoting organic farming (9,240,000 euros).
According to Fernando López Miras, the president of the Government of the Region of Murcia, the plan is designed to “throw a ball of oxygen to the sector in a time of difficulty”. He noted that the aid will not only benefit rural communities, but also simplify procedures and improve efficiency.
One of the key aspects of the plan is the creation of a control body to ensure compliance with the Food Chain Law, which will work to guarantee that farmers and ranchers receive a fair price for their products.
Responding to the recent farmer protests in Spain and across Europe, Mr López Miras offered the regional government’s support in the face of other demands, including the petition for “a European agricultural policy that seeks the economic sustainability of farms, in addition to the environmental one,” or the claim that “the same conditions of rigour and professionalism that are required of European agriculture extends to products from third countries.”
“The primary sector also has our full support when it requests the central government to properly regulate agricultural insurance, or when it requests a guarantee that no losses will occur,” concluded López Miras, who assured that his administration will continue to be “the voice of the farmers of the Region of Murcia.”
