ARCHIVED - Regional border closures across most of Spain for the weekend of All Saints
As of Thursday evening Galicia, Extremadura and the offshore islands are the only areas of Spain NOT enforcing border closures and movement restrictions
The whole of central Spain has announced border restrictions for the forthcoming weekend, which in all cases except Madrid and the Valencia region will apply for a two week period as regional governments attempt to prevent the mass movement of the population during a weekend in which it is tradition to visit family burial plots and normally involves travel outside of the home municipality.
In all cases the intention is to limit NON ESSENTIAL TRAVEL, particularly leisure travel, so all of the regions except Galicia and Extremadura will only be permitting entry into their regions for justifiable reasons. If you are travelling through these regions there will be no problem doing so, the only problem some travellers may face is when they reach their destination they may be asked to justify the reason for their journey before being granted access into a region. For those catching ferries to leave Spain or flights there are no problems crossing through regions and currently the borders with France and Portugal remain open.
Click here for some basic information about the border closures
Madrid: the situation is a little confusing one, following negotiations between the regional government of Madrid and the national Government which has finally agreed that the regional government can close the boundaries of the Madrid region for only 3 days over the All Saints’ long weekend and again over the weekend of the 9th November, another local fiesta. In the meantime, 32 health areas are quarantined and no travel is permitted from these areas at all.
Andalucía: the region has effectively closed its boundaries and those of all municipalities in the provinces of Jaén, Granada and Sevilla as of Thursday night until 9th November.
Aragón: the region closed its boundaries and those of the municipalities of Zaragoza, Huesca and Teruel on Tuesday, until 9th November.
Asturias: the region closed its boundaries on Wednesday for two weeks.
Basque Country: the region has announced the closure of its external boundaries and restricted movement between internal municipalities.
Balearics: the municipality of Manacor is in lockdown as of Thursday night, although the islands have not declared a perimeter closure.
Canary Islands: No perimeter closures are in force and the islands are exempted from the curfew due to low case numbers.
Castilla y León: the region has announced the closure of its boundaries from 30th October until at least 9th November.
Castilla-La Mancha: the region has announced the closure of its boundaries until at least 9th November.
Cantabria: the region announced the closure of its boundaries until at least 9th November from nidnight on Thursday.
Catalunya: the external borders are closed and internal municipal borders closed at the weekends.
Comunidad Valenciana: On Thursday evening the Valencia Region declared its intention to close its external borders from mid-morning on Friday for one week.
Extremadura: only 18 municipalities are currently in lockdown, but neighbouring regions have banned inter-regional travel, effectively landlocking the region, so a border confinement is largely irrelevant. Extremadura has not restricted its own borders.
Galicia: only 8 municipalities in the province of Orense are currently in lockdown. However, travel into the neighbouring regions is not permitted as neighbouring region have border restrictions in place..
La Rioja: the region has announced the closure of its external boundaries until 7th November. Internally the municipalities of Logroño and Arnedo are confined.
Murcia: the region has announced the closure of its boundaries and those of all 45
municipalities as of Thursday night.Click for full details about the Murcia closures.
Navarra: the region closed its boundaries on 22nd October until 4th November . Bars and restaurants have been ordered to close.
Ceuta and Melilla: Ceuta does not permit entry or exit from the enclave at the weekends between 30th October and 2nd November and again from the 6th to 8th December.
Melilla has closed shops from 21:00 onwards and restricted journeys to the Spanish mainland.
