The westbound carriageway of the San Javier-Murcia falls victim to the floodwater

The heavy rain which fell during Monday night as another gota fría storm formed over the Mar Menor, bringing well over 100 millimetres of rain to Los Alcázares, has forced the closure due to flooding of numerous roads in the area including the westbound carriageway of the RM-19 motorway between San Javier and the city of Murcia.

Fortunately, the rain eased off as day broke and by 9.30 at least one lane of the motorway was re-opened, but other roads belonging to the regional network were also affected, all of them in the Mar Menor area. As at 7.30 on Tuesday morning these included the following:

- the RM-E33 between El Albujón and La Aljorra

- the RM-F54 between Los Belones and Los Nietos

- the FM-F33 between El Mojón and San Pedro del Pinatar

- the RM-F29 between Torre Pacheco and Dolores

- the RM-F26 from Balsicas to Los Alcázares

- the RM-F22 from Balsicas to Torre Pacheco

- the RM-F35 between San Javier and La Puebla

- the RM-F23 between El Mirador and San Cayetano

- the RM-F28 between Pozo Aledo and La Puebla.

In addition, the Town Hall of Cartagena lists the following closures: 

- Carretera del Sifón (between El Bohío and las Tejeras)

- Carretera de El Albujón - La Aljorra

- The road which crosses the rambla in Los Belones (Campo Verde)

- The road which crosses the rambla between Islas Menores and Mar de Cristal

- The road which crosses the rambla between Pozo de Los Palos and La Guía

- The Camino de la Mina as it crosses the Rambla de El Albujón.

Within the municipality of Murcia there are also rural roads closed to traffic:

- Camino Torre Abellán in Avileses

- Camino de los Carros in Sangonera la Seca

- The F9 between La Tercia and Gea y Truyols

- The Rambla del Albujón road in Lobosillo.

However, the forecast is for more rain during Tuesday and that list may well grow longer as the day goes on. With numerous local roads also closed by the floodwater car journeys in the Campo de Cartagena are strongly advised against, and in San Javier and Los Alcázares the urban streets are particularly hazardous as both towns are close to being cut off from the rest of the Region of Murcia.

The meteorologists at Aemet maintain that this storm will be much less severe than the one which caused widespread flooding in Murcia in September, but for those trapped in their homes by the floodwater that will come as little consolation as it is demonstrated once again that the Campo de Cartagena and the towns on the inland shore of the Mar Menor are particularly susceptible to flooding.
