ARCHIVED - Semi-nude Dutch bullfight protestor breaks into Murcia bullring in the middle of a 1-minute silence

Peter Jansen, a seasoned anti-bullfight campaigner, was violently escorted from the Murcia arena after his protest
Dutchman Peter Jansen, founder and spokesman of Animalista international: the Vegan Strike Group, disrupted bullfighting in Murcia city yesterday afternoon when he hopped over the barrier and into the ring with his shirt off to hold up a sign protesting against the blood sport.
The protest comes just one day after a bull worker was gored to death trying to deliver the finishing blow to a wounded bull that was thought mostly dead before it got up and skewered him several times with its horns.
A day later, on Tuesday September 13, protestor Peter jumped into the La Condomina bullring just when a minute’s silence was observed in memory of the deceased man, holding up a sign bearing the slogan “Violence against animals is not culture”.
He was shirtless, and on his torso had written the words, “A minute’s silence for the murdered bulls”.
He was quickly arrested by police officers who were on duty at the bullring, and was taken away.
Peter released a video in English and Spanish on his Vegan Strike Group Facebook page after the event, explaining his actions.
He says his intention was to “draw attention to the thousands of bulls that have to die every year in this terrible form of cruel entertainment”.
“Bullfighting is a barbaric activity,” his message said, “and the International Vegan Strike Group has been campaigning for years to ban this barbaric activity.”
He also expressed his disbelief that the bullfighting community in Murcia would choose to continue their ‘fiesta’ celebrations so soon after the violent death of one of its own.
“The animal rights organisation considers it disrespectful of the bullfighting organisation to the family of the deceased to choose to continue with the bullfighting festival the day after his death. Out of respect for the deceased they should cancel the event.”
The Facebook video, which was recorded shortly after Peter was escorted from the arena, shows scratches on his back which he attributes to the violence of those who subdued and ejected him from the bullring.
“Of course, they use violence… they kicked me. There were 10 policemen in the corridor in front of me.”
He also underscored that his protests are not against the toreros and matadors themselves, but rather are for the animals.
“They are very bad people, they are shameless. But we fight everywhere, and of course in the biggest plazas, in the biggest bullfight arenas. We try to defend the animals.”
Peter and his campaign group have staged similar protests at bullfights in Mexico, Peru and other places where bullfighting still exists since 2013, and also protests against the use of dolphins in entertainment shows.
This was the 66th time he had jumped into the bullring in protest, and he was also present in 2019 in Murcia at the bullfights there.
In his latest video, he promised to “fight until the last bullfight arena has been closed down” and there is “no animal suffering anymore”.
