ARCHIVED ARTICLE
The incidence rate in Spain has taken another plunge as intensive care admissions drop further
The downward trend signalling the end of the seventh wave of the coronavirus pandemic has continued in the latest health report published on Friday September 9, which indicates an improvement in all pandemic data. Most importantly, hospital and intensive care occupancy rates are rapidly moving out of the danger zone, although another 101 Covid-related fatalities were registered this week.
Coronavirus infections
The Ministry of Health registered 8,416 new cases of coronavirus on Friday September 9, of which 4,873 were diagnosed in people over the age of 60.
This brings the total number of infections since the beginning of the pandemic to 13,367,647.
Cumulative incidence rate
The 14-day cumulative incidence rate in people over the age of 60 has dipped to 137.39 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, which represents a good decrease compared to the 149.03 reported on Friday.
The 7-day incidence in citizens aged 60 or over has also reflects this slow-down, dropping from 69 cases to 61.45.
Those over 80 years of age have the highest level of risk of contagion, with an incidence of 208.50 cases, followed by septuagenarians (147.69), while the lowest level of transmission recorded is that of those in their sixties (92.86). All of these age groups have experienced a decline over the weekend.
There has been a bit of a shift between communities, with the autonomous city of Ceuta now boasting the lowest incidence rate of just 52.71 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. It is followed by
Aragón, with 57.76 cases and Navarra (67.00).
Extremadura is now the only region with a 2-week incidence rate above the 300-mark.
Hospitalisations and fatalities
There are currently 2,686 patients admitted to hospitals throughout Spain compared to 2,889 in the last report, while 182 people are being treated for more serious conditions in the country’s ICUs (a considerable drop from 224).
These data mean that 2.27% of all hospital beds are occupied by Covid patients while the occupancy rate in intensive care has fallen to 2.13%.
In the worst moments of the health crisis, more than 20% of intensive care beds were filled with Covid patients, with more than 2,000 patients being treated.
A further 101 Covid-related fatalities were reported in Friday’s update, bringing the overall death toll in Spain to 113,130 people.
Vaccination data
As of September 12, 92.8% of the population over the age of 12 is fully vaccinated against Covid, which means that a total of 39,147,403 people have now received two doses.
So far, 39,260,488 have received at least one dose, 93.1% of the population over 12 years of age.
