ARCHIVED - Sixth wave begins to beat a retreat: Spain Covid update January 25
After a slight rebound before the weekend, the cumulative incidence rate in Spain has decreased once more
On Monday January 24, Spain exceeded nine million coronavirus infections since the beginning of the pandemic, almost half of which have been diagnosed during the sixth wave, thanks in no small part to the emergence of the Omicron variant before Christmas. Since the end of November, when this strain first reached Spain, the Ministry of Health has detected more than four million cases.
Despite these soaring numbers, the experts are confident that the end of this wave is in sight. The cumulative incidence rate dropped again on Monday after a slight rebound before the weekend, a strong indication that the situation is at last moving in the right direction.
Coronavirus infections
On January 24, a further 305,432 cases of Covid were registered across Spain, 27,248 of which were diagnosed in the last 24 hours. These figures are lower than those of the same day the previous week, when 331,467 infections were reported, which indicates a slight downward trend in the evolution of the pandemic.
In the past two weeks, 1,602,164 positives have been registered, bringing the total number of infections since the health crisis began to 9,280,890.
Between January 14 and 20, Spain’s autonomous communities have carried out 2,209,284 Covid diagnostic tests and the positivity rate now stands at 37.39%, down from 38.05% on Friday.
Cumulative incidence rate
The 14-day incidence rate has fallen to 3,381 cases per 100,000 inhabitants – a drop of 37 points compared to Friday’s figure.
Over the weekend, the rate of incidences across communities has been shuffled somewhat, and the north African enclave of Ceuta now has the highest number at 6,149 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. It is followed by Catalonia and the Region of Murcia, with 5,402 and 5,184 cases respectively.
A considerable drop can be seen in Madrid (2,131) and Andalucía (1,358), while the Valencian Community is now well above the national average, with 4,005 infections per 100,000.
By age group, children under the age of 11 continue to have the highest cumulative incidence rate, at 5,248 cases, while the most vulnerable populations (60+) have the lowest.
Hospitalisations and Fatalities
ICU occupancy continues to cause concern: it has grown by almost one point since Friday and stands at 23.94%. Catalonia has remained at very high risk for some time now, with a worrying 43.30% of intensive care beds occupied by Covid patients.
Eight other communities are also in this precarious situation: Aragón (32.02%), the Balearic Islands (30.21 %), Castilla y León (27.10%), the Valencian Community (25.98%), Madrid (28.02%), Melilla (35.29%), Navarra (25.98%) and the Basque Country (28.15%).
In addition, there are currently 19,617 hospitalised Covid patients - in the last 24 hours there have been 2,067 admissions and 1,229 discharges - and they occupy 15.76% of the total beds.
Although the beginning of the decline of the sixth wave in terms of transmission is confirmed, this is sadly not the case with regard to hospital pressure or deaths, which continue to show no clear signs of decline.
Since Friday, 253 people have lost their lives, 19 more fatalities than the previous weekend. In the last seven days, 573 people have died from Covid.
The overall death toll since the beginning of the pandemic in Spain is 91,994.
Vaccination data
Since the vaccination campaign began, 88,759,314 doses of the vaccine have been administered throughout Spain and there are currently 38,242,161 people fully inoculated – 90.7% of the population over the age of 12.
To date, 53% of children between the ages of five and 11 have received their first vaccine, while 91.10% of people over 70 years have had their booster dose.
Since the third vaccination was extended to all age groups over the age of 18, 11.43% of adults between 20 and 29 have been triple jabbed.
