Spain could be approaching the peak of the pandemic wave

As predicted by the Minister of Health earlier in the week, Spain is showing the first signs that the sixth wave of the coronavirus pandemic is beginning to reach its peak. While the country registered its third-highest number of infections on Thursday January 13, the cumulative incidence rate has slowed down substantially: the 14-day figure has gone from rising an average of one hundred points a day to just 28 in the last 24 hours.

Coronavirus infections

The autonomous communities have registered 159,161 new cases of Covid on January 13, 70,803 of which were diagnosed in the last day. This brings the total number of infections since the beginning of the pandemic to 7,930,528.

The positivity rate stands at 39.87%, up from 38.89% on Wednesday. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that this figure be below 5% to consider the spread of the virus as 'controlled'.

Cumulative incidence rate

The 14-day incidence has increased slightly on Thursday to reach 3,156.63 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, a definite slow-down compared to recent days. And while those aged between 20 and 29 still have the highest chance of infection, at 4,177 cases, this figure has dropped 108 points since yesterday.

By autonomous community, Andalucía once again has the lowest figure at 1,455 cases, while Navarra has finally slipped under the 7,000-case barrier. The Region of Murcia is still above the Spanish average, with 3,747 cases per 100,000 inhabitants while the Valencian Community stands at 2,763.

Moreover, the 7-day incidence rate has plummeted to 1,483 cases, a good indicator that the figures could continue to drop in the coming days.

Fatalities

On Thursday, a further 112 people lost their lives as a result of Covid. This is 13 fewer fatalities than the previous day and brings the overall death toll since the health crisis began to 90,620.

Hospitalisations

Despite the fact that the Omicron variant doesn’t appear to be causing the same level of fatalities and serious illness as previous strains, the high number of infections has started to heap pressure on the hospitals. There are currently 17,269 patients admitted with Covid (up from 17,028) on Wednesday while 2,227 people are being treated in Spain’s ICUs (an increase of one patient).

While the general occupancy rate has increased by 0.16% the pressure on intensive care has fallen ever so slightly, with an occupancy of 23.62% (a drop of 0.15% compared to Wednesday).

Vaccination data

Spain’s Ministry of Health announced a number of changes to the vaccination campaign on Thursday January 14, the most significant of which is that booster jabs will now be open to everyone aged 18 and over. The time limit between receiving the Pfizer or AstraZeneca second shot and the third dose has also been reduced from six months to five.

A total of 38,125,469 people, representing 90.5% of the population over 12, have now been double jabbed while 38,956,399 people (92.5%) have received their first dose.
