The SOS Mar Menor platform transmits their proposals to the Minister of Ecological Transition
Press release from SOS Mar Menor August 25.
The organizations which are members of the Platform have shown their enormous concern about the critical situation affecting the lagoon and have asked for urgent and effective measures.
One of the most socially agreed upon requests is the need for a committee to coordinate all of the implicated administrations and which would involve social organizations while being led by the state.
Some of the more urgent measures would be the immediate removal of any illegally irrigated surfaces and the creation of a green perimetral ring which would be completely free of fertilizers.
The organizations which make up the SOS Mar Menor Platform have issued a positive report about the meeting held this morning with the Minister of Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge, Teresa Ribera. In said meeting, the organizations expressed their concern over the critical state of degradation currently being suffered by the lagoon’s ecosystem and they requested coordination between administrations and urgent effective solutions.
Amongst the measures with greater social support is the creation of a committee, in the same style as the Portmán follow-up committee, in which all of the implicated administrations are coordinated and which has representation from social and environmental groups. The platform also considers that this committee should be led by the central government. This mechanism should serve to coordinate all of the measures to be enforced in the Mar Menor area, so that effective solutions are addressed at the source, and the committee would also promote an integral management of the territory and economic activities.
Another priority point insisted upon by the organizations is the elimination of any illegally irrigated surface around the saltwater lagoon. In fact, they request that the Ministry order the Segura Hydrographic Confederation to cut off the water supply to any of these surfaces, making their cultivation de facto impossible, while the regional government processes the restitution of said surfaces.
They have also demanded compliance with the European regulations surrounding the use of fertilizers, while having a specialized body to inspect the parameter, taking into account the fact that this area has been declared a Zone Vulnerable to Nitrates.
Finally, the SOS Mar Menor Platform has reiterated, amongst the other proposed measures, the vast social and scientific consensus surrounding the need to encircle the area with a fertilizer-free perimeter, in which wetlands are restored and vegetation is planted to act as a filter to stop sediments and nutrients from the Campo de Cartagena, and whose effectiveness will be enhanced by the enforcement of other measures throughout the entire agricultural basin.
After the meeting, the organizations implicated in the SOS Mar Menor Platform have expressed their satisfaction about the interest shown by Minister Ribera, and their hope that the proposed urgent measures can be put into action soon.
As a final warning, they want to make it clear that, if action is not taken urgently, the Mar Menor could soon reach a point of no return.
Organizations which make up the Platform: Pacto por el Mar Menor, Anse, Ecologistas en Acción RM, FAVCAC and Asociación de Pescadores.
