ARCHIVED - Spain exceeds 90,000 Covid-related deaths: update January 11
The incidence rate in Spain is approaching 3,000 cases per 100,000 inhabitants
With the Christmas period just behind us, most would not be surprised that Spain has experienced a rebound of infections, reaching an incidence rate of almost 3,000 infections per 100,000 inhabitants, according to the latest data published by the Ministry of Health on Monday January 10.
However, with children starting school this week and many workers returning to the office, the experts have warned that this may just be the tip of the iceberg before Spain reaches the peak of the sixth wave.
Coronavirus infections
An additional 292,394 infections were reported in Spain between Friday and Monday, 44,039 of which were diagnosed in the last 24 hours. These figures are lower than the 372,766 positives recorded on the same day last week, after the New Year weekend, but bring the total number of infections since the beginning of the pandemic to 7,457,300.
On Monday, President Sánchez suggested that the EU should begin to consider coronavirus to be an endemic illness rather than a pandemic, as although infections have increased, the death rate is falling and more than 90% of the Spanish population is now fully vaccinated.
Cumulative incidence rate
The 14-day incidence rate continues to rise and now stands at 2,989.47 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, compared to 2,722.27 on Friday.
Despite the somewhat alarming numbers, health experts believe that the 7-day incidence rate, which has dropped to less than half the two-week figure over the weekend, could be a positive indication that cases will drop in the coming weeks, possibly heralding the beginning of the end of the sixth wave.
Navarra (7,101), the Basque Country (6,184) and Aragon (5,415) continue to have the highest figure while Andalucía is once again the community with the lowest 14-day number in Spain, with just 1,616 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. The Region of Murcia and the Valencian Community are skirting just below the national average with 2,192 and 2,454 cases respectively.
Those aged between 20 and 29 continue to have the highest incidence rate, at 4,314.
Hospitalisations
There are currently 16,496 patients hospitalised with Covid throughout Spain (up from 14,426 on Friday) with 2,200 people being treated in the ICU (up slightly from 2,056 on Friday.
This means that the percentage of beds occupied by coronavirus patients in hospitals has climbed to 14.4% while in intensive care, this figure has risen from 22.06% to 23.58% over the past couple of days.
Fatalities
The Ministry of Health reported on January 10 that the overall number of Covid-related deaths in Spain since the health crisis began has risen to 90,136 after a further 202 fatalities were registered over the weekend.
According to the information website ‘ourworldindata’, Spain is now the seventh country in the world with the most coronavirus deaths and is ranked 32nd in deaths per 100,000 inhabitants.
Crucially though, although 3,219 people have already lost their lives in this sixth wave, which began on October 14, it is actually the least deadly period for Spain. However, daily death notifications are on the rise and health experts are worried that the country will experience a familiar pattern already seen earlier in the pandemic: two weeks after an explosion of infections, there is generally an increase in hospitalisations followed by a growth in fatalities.
Omicron variant
The Omicron variant is now responsible for between 48.7% and 90.9% of all infections in Spain according to random PCR samples examined in 13 different communities.
Vaccination data
Up to 38,079,025 people, representing 90.4% of the population over 12, have now been fully jabbed while 38,914,739 (92.4%) have received their first vaccine.
