ARCHIVED - Spain on the horizon of de-escalation: Covid update March 1
ARCHIVED ARTICLE
A Ministry technical error has led to a delay in the publication of some coronavirus data in Spain
For the second time in as many months, the Ministry of Health in Spain has failed to publish updated coronavirus data corresponding to Monday February 28 due to unspecified technical problems, which the authorities hope to be “able to solve in the next few hours”.
Despite this, both President Sánchez and the Health Minister, Carolina Darias, released hopeful messages on Monday that the end of the pandemic is nigh, reporting that the latest figures show that the cumulative incidence rate is moving out of the danger zone and approaching 600 cases.
“When we make that decision [to eliminate the obligation of the mask in closed spaces], which we are going to make very soon, I think it is important that we do it with the scientific community and those responsible for health and with the consensus of the autonomous communities,” Mr Sánchez said, adding that “we are on a horizon of de-escalation, of overcoming the pandemic.”
According to President Sánchez, the cumulative incidence is dropping at a rate of around 6% each day and on Friday it stood at 613 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
Melilla continues to have the lowest figure of 290 cases but Andalucía (393), which has held onto one of the bottom spots for several weeks have been slightly underscored by Castilla-La Mancha, with a 14-day rate of 390 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. The capital, Madrid, has also made great headway in recent days and now stands at 398 cases.
Coronavirus infections and fatalities
The most up-to-date data from Friday February 25 reveal that the coronavirus pandemic has caused almost eleven million infections (10,977,524) to date and that a total of 99,410 people have lost their lives.
Hospitalisations
Hospital pressure, and particularly intensive care, continues its downward trend and as of Friday, 5.8% of all beds were occupied by coronavirus patients and the ICU has dropped to 11.3%.
Vaccination data
The immunisation records for Spain were updated on Monday February 28: a total of 39,022,500 people over the age of 12 have now been double jabbed, which represents 92.9% of the population.
In addition, 57.4% of children between five and 11 years have received at least one dose of the paediatric vaccine, while only 18% are fully vaccinated.
