Storm-damaged Mazarrón beaches get an urgent makeover

Puerto and Rihuete beaches are being restored after a series of storms earlier this year

Mazarrón Town Council, working alongside the Murcia Coastal Authority, has launched an urgent action plan to restore two of the town's most popular beaches after they took a battering from a series of storms earlier this year.

Work got underway at playas de Puerto and Rihuete on April 27 and is expected to continue until May 15, with the aim of getting both beaches back into the best possible shape.

Rather than focusing only on the damage that's already been done, the plan also includes developing solutions to help the coastline cope better with future storms, something the town council has described as a key priority.

As part of the work, sand will be loosened and improved, sediment will be recovered from underwater areas and redistributed, and an experimental sand replenishment will be carried out at Puerto beach to test how it performs and explore more sustainable options for the future.

Tests will also be carried out at various points along the coastline to identify any problem areas and build a clearer picture of how the terrain responds, all of which will feed into more accurate long-term planning.

It's worth noting that during this period, the town council won't be carrying out any routine maintenance that involves mixing sand so as not to interfere with the technical monitoring of the work.

There will be heavy machinery on site throughout and the Local Police will be involved in making sure the necessary safety measures are in place.

The town council has asked residents and visitors to bear with them during any disruption, and has been keen to point out that the rest of Mazarrón's extensive coastline remains open and perfectly enjoyable while the restoration work is carried out.
