ARCHIVED - Strain on hospitals in Spain continues to ease as fatalities remain below 500 for fourth consecutive day
No new admissions to intensive care in 6 of the 17 regions of Spain
Wednesday morning update:
4,211 new cases, total 208,389
435 fatalities, total 21,717
3,401 new recoveries, 85,915 in total
The daily coronavirus update issued by Spain’s Ministry of Health on Wednesday morning included a slight increase in the number of new fatalities associated with Covid-19 to 435, remaining well below 500 for the fourth consecutive day as evidence continues to accumulate that the spread of the virus is gradually being brought under control as the lockdown nears the end of its sixth week.
The cumulative fatality total now stands at 21,717 in Spain, while the number of confirmed cases has risen to 208,389 after an increase since the Tuesday update of 4,211 – slightly higher than the figure the day before but still representing a rise of only around 2 per cent. New cases again slightly outnumbered recoveries (of which another 3,401 were added to the total on Wednesday morning, bringing the cumulative figure to 85,915), although at the same time this means that the recoveries figure now amounts to around 41 per cent of all cases confirmed.
It is worth pointing out that in Spain as a whole progress has been made regarding the volume of testing being carried out and there are now around 700,000 tests being performed every day (as opposed to 200,000 a couple of weeks ago). This makes the stabilization in the spread of Covid-19 particularly encouraging, and the Ministry of Health reports that the “RO” index of contagion has now fallen below 1.
Importantly, the strain placed on the health services of Spain is now beginning to ease, and with antibody testing now included in the program many of the new confirmed cases are patients who either show only very mild symptoms or have already recovered. On Wednesday it was reported that no new coronavirus patients were admitted to intensive care the day before in 6 of the country’s 17 regions – the Canaries, Cantabria, Extremadura, Murcia, Navarra and La Rioja – or in the north African enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla, and in Madrid the number of patients in intensive care has decreased from 1,500 to 1,024.
Remember: LOCKDOWN MEANS LOCKDOWN. STAY AT HOME. STAY SAFE AND DO YOUR BIT TO REDUCE THE SPREAD OF CORONAVIRUS.

What to do if you are in the Region of Murcia and believe you may have contracted the virus
The regional government has set up a special helpline to supply information to members of the public (900 121212) if they suspect that they may have contracted the virus rather than going straight to hospital or to a medical centre.
Sensible precautions
The advice being issued to members of the public by medical authorities all over the world coincides on the following points:
- Wash hands frequently with either soap and water or a sanitiser gel
- Catch coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues – and throw the tissues away immediately after use before immediately washing your hands!
- If you don’t have a tissue, use your sleeve – and wash the item of clothing used at the next opportunity
- AVOID touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- AVOID close contact with people who are unwell
- Don´t panic!
