The intense cold that has marked January will continue into the month’s final stretch, but the weather will finally begin to heat up a little as we approach February. The coming week will be largely dry, sunny and settled, according to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), and the temperatures will recover a bit compared to this weekend.

As explained by Aemet spokesperson Ruben del Campo, the cold will continue this week but from Monday January 30 the mercury will see “a progressive rise”, particularly in the middle of the day. Several regions, including Valencia and Andalucia, will still experience freezing temperatures at night, which will lead to “intense” frosts in mountain areas.

The scattered showers that could hit the Balearic Islands and the southeast coast on Monday afternoon will pass by Tuesday January 31, giving way to a dry and bright day across the country, with the exception of Cantabria, where weak rainfall is likely.

Daytime temperatures will rise sharply in general, more noticeably along the eastern coast, hitting a spring-like 19ºC in Murcia and hovering in the mid- to high-teens elsewhere. The night will remain chilly in the south but the mercury will rise elsewhere.

The anticyclone will continue into the new month and Wednesday February 1 promises to be clear or slightly overcast for the most part. Some light rain is possible in the north of mainland Spain as well as in the Canary Islands, but the snow level will rise to around 1,800 metres.

There will be little change to the temperatures on Wednesday but an occasionally strong northwesterly wind to the south and in the Balearic Islands could make it feel cooler.

The pleasant outlook continues into Thursday February 2 with most of the country expecting a dry, clear day. Intervals of cloud and scattered showers are expected in western Cantabria and in the extreme south.

Daytime temperatures will drop along the Cantabrian coast, Menorca and southern Andalucia but will rise slightly in the rest of the country, remaining in the mid-teens in most of the south, where temperatures will also increase by a couple of degrees at night.

Winds from east and north will predominate while weak frosts are forecast in the Balearic and Canary Islands.
