The low-cost chains quietly spreading across Spain's high streets

From bargain furniture to discounted fashion and beauty, a growing wave of budget retailers is reshaping the Spanish high street

Spain’s retail landscape is increasingly being shaped by a new generation of low-cost chains that many shoppers may not yet recognise by name, but which are steadily gaining ground thanks to their focus on value.

The number of low-cost retail chains operating across Spain has grown rapidly in recent years, driven by consumer demand for decent quality products at lower prices across categories such as clothing, home goods, food and toys. These stores are increasingly appealing to families looking to keep everyday spending under control.

While giants such as Ikea and Primark remain well known, a number of newer or lesser-known brands are quietly building a presence in shopping centres and high streets across the country.

One of the most direct competitors to Ikea is the Danish home retailer Jysk. The company offers a similar concept with affordable furniture, bedding and decorative items aimed at customers who want practical home products without the high price tag.

At the other end of the retail spectrum is Sqrups!, a neighbourhood-style outlet that combines the feel of a traditional “everything for €1” bazaar with a small supermarket. Shoppers can find a wide range of items at heavily discounted prices.

Toys are another area where budget chains are thriving. Malaga-based MGI has built a reputation around low-cost toys, although its stores now also stock household appliances as well as home and garden products.

Discount fashion remains a key battleground. The German retailer KiK entered Spain in 2022 with the slogan “Get dressed from head to toe for 30 euros”, targeting families looking for affordable clothing. Its arrival marked another competitor in the race to challenge the dominance of Primark in the low-cost fashion market.

Several other international chains are also gaining attention:

Half Price, a Polish retailer offering well-known brands at reduced prices thanks to surplus stock from past seasons
Pepco, another Polish chain that focuses on affordable fashion and home goods for families
Action, a Dutch discount retailer selling more than 6,000 items including toys, tools, cleaning products and kitchenware

Elsewhere, Danish brand Normal specialises in low-priced cosmetics and personal care items, with a product range that also includes snacks, drinks and household goods.

Meanwhile, Spain’s own Ale-Hop continues to expand internationally from its base in Alicante, selling original gift items, stationery and home accessories. The brand now operates in several countries including Portugal, Croatia and Italy and carries around 6,000 different products.

Another growing name is Miniso, the Chinese chain known for selling designer-style products at affordable prices. Its concept centres on offering what it describes as “small, affordable joys” to customers through a mix of everyday items.

Taken together, the expansion of these retailers reflects a clear shift in the way many people shop in Spain, where affordability and practicality are becoming just as important as brand names.
