The Murcia Regional Government intensifies the promotion of its camping and caravanning activities in Germany

The Regional Ministry of the Presidency, Tourism, Culture and Sports in Murcia is promoting the Region in the LXI edition of the 'Caravan Salon' trade fair in Germany.

This fair is one of the major international events in the camping and caravanning sector, with 16 pavilions and more than 650 exhibitors, and is held in the German city of Dusseldorf from August 26 until September 4.

The Regional Authority, in collaboration with the Association of Campsites of the Murcia Region, has a display at the event where the network of campsites of the association are being promoted, as well as the region's tourist activities and its network of complementary services. Currently, in the Region of Murcia there are up to 18 established campsotes with a total of 14,731 places.

The Director of the Institute of Tourism of the Region of Murcia (Itrem), Juan Francisco Martínez, pointed out that "this kind of tourism is one of the types of accommodation with the greatest seasonality, with a high occupancy rate in winter, guaranteed by clients of Central and Northern Europe".

In fact, Murcia was the only region in Spain where the number of overnight stays during the winter season, from October 2019 to March 2020, was much higher than that registered in the summer season, from April 2019 to September 2019, which was, 586,186 compared to 539,524.

In this respect, the promotion of camping tourism is one of the lines of action in the 2022-2032 Strategic Plan, a tourism and accommodation plan to boost sustainability and contact with nature, ecology and family-based activities.

The Director of Itrem pointed out that "motorhomes and travelling tourism are becoming a great social phenomenon throughout Europe". In this regard, the Regional Government is updating its camping laws and rules. This means that, for the first time ever, motorhome areas and campsites in Murcia will be regulated, implementing a new categorisation by stars equating campsites with hotels and rural guest houses, improving their levels of accessibility and ensuring all will have amenities, entrances, plots and toilets which are acessible to disabled people, as with other types of accommodation.

How popular is camping in Murcia?

Camping tourism stands out for being one of the most resilient after the pandemic. In this regard, the Murcia Region, during the first semester of 2022, attained the best record for campers in the period from January to June according to available data, 62,109 – 2.5% more than in 2019. These travellers generated 562,185 overnight stays, which represents an increase of 6.1 percent compared to 2019, and also represents the best data for the January-June period of historical records.

Regarding the main markets, during the last year of normality, in 2019, Germany was the main foreign country where campers in Murcia came from, with 267,704 overnight stays, which represents 34% of the total. The United Kingdom was the second biggest market with 221,329 overnight stays and a total of 28%. France was the third source market of foreign tourism to the Region with 120,883 overnight stays, which represented a share of 15%.
