ARCHIVED - These are the Carnivals that have been suspended in Murcia due to Covid
Dates for the Spanish Carnival celebrations that have been pushed back in 2022
Carnival is a big, important festival in Spain, and the Murcia Region is no exception. It’s with a heavy heart, then, that many towns and cities across the Region have postponed or cancelled their Carnival celebrations this year because of the lingering threat of Covid-19.
The ‘Carnaval’ parades and festivities are normally held at the end of February and the beginning of March, with large, colourful processions of people dressed up in feathers and masks and lots of music and dancing.
Cartagena, Águilas, Lorca, the Mar Menor and Cabezo de Torres have all gradually modified their events scheduled for the last week of February, following the example of the Cadiz Carnival in Andalucía.
Cartagena
The first city in the Region to decide to change its parade dates was Cartagena. The city council and organisers agreed that “all the events related to the Carnival” should be moved back to June.
In addition, the Cartagena Carnival Federation itself, which brings together all the comparsas (Carnival organisations) of the city, has admitted that with the current capacity limitations, the events “would be clearly lacklustre” and “the protection of the health of the participants and the public attending” could not be guaranteed under those circumstances.
Thus, the feathers and spangles will walk through Cartagena between June 3 and 14, providing the Covid situation allows it by then.
Águilas
The Águilas Carnival is undisputedly one of the biggest and best in the whole Region of Murcia, and is even recognised as a festival of International Tourist Interest, on a par with other famous parades such as those in Tenerife and Cádiz.
However, this year the Town Hall and organisers have agreed to postpone the celebration to a future date in late July, as “it is unfeasible to hold a festival of this magnitude” right now.
The restrictions, due to the unstoppable spread of the pandemic, have made it difficult for the Carnival clubs to work with the dedication required for an event “of the level of our municipality which, if it were to be held, would have to greatly reduce the capacity of all its acts, losing the popular character which is a sign of its identity” as the Mayor of Águilas pointed out.
Murcia city
Several neighbourhood districts in Murcia city have postponed their Carnival celebrations until September 2022. One of the most important parades in Murcia’s capital city, that of the district of Cabezo de Torres (also a Festival of International Tourist Interest), should now coincide “with the mid-year Carnival” but that “in any case, everything will depend on the development of the pandemic”.
In Puente Tocinos, the organisers have decided to abide by the recommendations made by the Murcia City Council regarding these events – the council asked to avoid any type of mass gathering where social distancing measures cannot be guaranteed, and for this reason the organisers and the Municipal Council of the district have decided to postpone the Carnival until April 30.
Other places such as Beniaján and Llano de Brujas have also decided to look for a new date, most probably in the spring.
Lorca
Lorca has decided to hold its Carnival parades and events in late spring.
“It is expected that the presentation of the Lorca Carnival and its characters will be on Friday June 10, with the Grand Parade on Saturday June 11,” said the local Councillor for Celebrations, José Ángel Ponce.
However, over the next few weeks, the Town Hall and comparsas from Lorca have announced that “they will continue to hold new working meetings to continue working on the details of this year’s Carnival”.
Mar Menor
More Carnival parades have been postponed in the towns near the Mar Menor. Both Santiago de La Ribera and San Pedro del Pinatar have agreed to cancel their events.
However, San Pedro Town Council has decreed the local Carnival troupes will be able to take part in the town’s patron saint festivities and parade on July 10, if they so wish.
Los Alcázares has postponed its Carnival until May 14, while in the case of San Javier, the new Carnival dates will be April 23, which also happens to be St. George’s Day.
