ARCHIVED - These will be the parking restrictions, closed streets and altered bus timetables in Cartagena during Easter Week
There will be several road closures and temporary traffic measures in place at Easter. Here’s the complete list.
On the April 8, Friday of Sorrows, which is a public holiday in Cartagena, Murcia, traffic will be diverted, affecting both the city centre and the neighbourhoods and districts in which the processions for the Semana Santa Holy Week are held.
There will also be a series of measures relating to the special timetable for buses and where chairs and tables can be placed outside bars and cafés, as well as the consumption of alcohol on public roads and the relocation of taxi ranks.
This is the complete list of rules set out for Cartagena’s streets this Easter.
Restrictions in the town centre on April 8, Friday of Sorrows
- Early morning: From 1am hours, the following streets will be closed to traffic: Concepción, Plaza de San Ginés, San Francisco, Campos, San Miguel, Aire, Plaza de San Sebastián, Honda, Plaza San Francisco, Arco de la Caridad, San Vicente, Plaza Del Sevillano, Serreta, Caridad, Plaza de Risueño and Calle Duque.
- In the morning: From 11am, the following streets will be closed to traffic: Jara, Campos, Plaza San Francisco, Serreta and Caridad.
- Afternoon and evening: From 3pm, the following streets will be closed to traffic: Aire, Cañón, Plaza San Sebastián, Puertas de Murcia, Jabonerías, Tolosa Latour, Carmen, Santa Florentina, Parque, Plaza Puertas de la Serreta, Serreta, Caridad, Plaza de Risueño, Duque, Plaza San Ginés, streets San Francisco, Campos and Jara, Plaza de la Merced and Calle San Diego.
Traffic restrictions in Cartagena city centre during Holy Week
In general, from Thursday March 31 at 9am, in order to unload chairs and work on the assembly of boxes, grandstands and processional parades, the parking and circulation of vehicles will be prohibited until the end of the procession of the Risen Christ, on April 17, in the following streets: Aire, Cañón, Plaza San Sebastián, Puertas de Murcia, Carmen, Santa Florentina, Parque, Plaza Puertas de la Serreta, Serreta, Caridad, Duque, Plaza San Ginés, San Francisco, Campos and Jara.
Vehicles will not be allowed to drive on the following streets on the days indicated below:
- Saturday April 9: San Diego, Plaza de la Merced (south side), Gloria, Saura, Subida San Diego, Príncipe de Vergara, General Ordoñez, Muralla del Mar, Vial y zona de la Universidad Politécnica, Trovero Marín, Paseo Delicias, Plaza de España, Menéndez y Pelayo.
- Tuesday April 12: Calle Real, Príncipe de Vergara, Cañón and Plaza San Francisco. Access to the car parks on Calle Real and Paseo Alfonso XII will be as follows: The Plaza del Par car park will have its entrance on the Plaza de España side and the Marina and Plaza del Rey car parks will be accessed from Paseo Alfonso XII (Port).
- Wednesday April 13: General traffic restrictions will be extended to Calles Jabonerías, San Roque and Carmen.
- Friday April 15: Calles Honda, Arco de Caridad, Pza. del Risueño, Subida de San Diego, Plaza de la Merced, Carretera del Muelle de San Pedro, Calle del Jesús, Pescadería, Subida del Nazareno, Paseo Delicias, Puente de Mompeán, Trovero Marín, Puerta de San José, Adarve de Artillería, Muralla Carlos III (UPCT), Jabonerías, Tolosa Latour, Calle del Carmen and San Diego.
- Sunday April 17: Carmen, San Roque and Jabonerías Streets will be closed.
Traffic restrictions in Cartagena neighbourhoods and surrounding areas during Holy Week
Traffic will be cut off and parking will be prohibited on the following dates and in the following places, always 2 hours before the official departure time of the processions mentioned.
- Los Dolores neighbourhood: Palm Sunday, April 10, Liturgical Procession from 11 to 11:20am and Good Friday, April 15, Procession of the Cristo de la Salud at 11am and Stations of the Cross for the death of the Lord at 6:30pm.
- Barrio Peral-Los Barreros: Palm Sunday, April 10, at 10:30am, from the church of Barrio Peral to the church of Los Barreros.
- Barrio de San Antón: Palm Sunday, April 10, processions at 7am and 10am.
- Barrio de la Concepción: Palm Sunday, April 10, procession from 11:30am to 12:30am, from El Asilo de las Hermanas de los Pobres in Calle Pio XII to the church of Barrio de la Concepción in Calle Mayor.
- Alumbres: Friday of Sorrows, April 8, and Easter Monday, April 11, at 9pm, in the following streets: Duque, Gloria, Pelayo, Malecón, Canalejas, Trabajo, Estación, Norte and Mayor.
- Polígono Residencial de Santa Ana: Palm Sunday April 10, between 12 and 12:20pm hours, procession leaving from the parish church in calle Milán, going along Avenida Venecia and calle Turín.
- La Aljorra: Palm Sunday, April 10, at 12 noon, in the following streets: Calle Escuelas, Virgen de los Dolores, Trabajo and Iglesia de La Aljorra. Good Friday, April 15, at 9:30pm, along the following route: Virgen de los Dolores, Trabajo, San José Obrero, Purísima, Plaza de la Iglesia, Antonio Pascual and Virgen de los Dolores.
- Pozo Estrecho: Friday of Sorrows, April 8, at 8pm. Via Crucis of La Loma. Maundy Thursday, April 14, at 9:30pm Procession of Silence.
- La Puebla: Palm Sunday, April 10, at 11am and Maundy Thursday, April 14, at 10pm, in the following streets: Marqués de la Ensenada, Bretón de los Herreros and Avenida de José Manuel Claver.
- El Albujón: Palm Sunday, April 10, at 12:30pm, in the vicinity of the Hermitage. Maundy Thursday April 14 at 8:30pm in the following streets: Ermita de El Albujón, Avenida de la Constitución Española, Hogueras de San Juan, Carretera de La Aljorra and San Juan.
- Llano de El Beal: Palm Sunday, April 10, at 10:30am, in the following streets: Church, Gravina, Mayor, Segismundo Moret, Progreso, Libertad, Victoria Eugenia, Isaac Peral, Capitanes Ripoll, RMF-43 junction towards Estrecho San Ginés, Mayor, Plaza San Nicolás and Church of San Nicolás de Bari. Holy Wednesday, April 13, at 9pm, from the church of Llano del Beal to the parish church of Estrecho de San Ginés.
- El Algar: Friday of Sorrows, April 8, at 10pm. Via Crucis, Palm Sunday, April 10, at 6pm, in the following streets: Plaza de la Iglesia Nuestra Señora Virgen de los Llanos, Martín Solano, Castelar, Plaza del Teatro Apolo, Castelar, Martín Solano and Plaza de la Iglesia. Maundy Thursday, April 14, at 9:30pm, in the following streets: Plaza de la Iglesia Nuestra Señora Virgen de los Llanos, Piñero, Castelar and Plaza del Hondo.
- La Manga: Friday April 8. Penitential march at 7am. Salvatore Mundi Church, Daiquiri, Gran Vía, Cruce de las Triolas towards Cabo de Palos, Cruce de la Dunas, Subida al Faro and Explanada del Faro.
- Cabo de Palos: Saturday April 2, 7pm Holy Mass and Holy Week Proclamation of Cabo de Palos, Maundy Thursday, April 14, at 8:30pm, in the following streets: Paseo del Puerto, Aurelio Méndez, Sirio, Marín, Subida al Faro and Paseo de la Barra.
- Los Belones: Good Friday, April 15 at 9:30pm, in the following streets: Mayor, Murillo, San Isidoro, Avda de la Fuente, Mayor, San Isidro, Guzmán el Bueno, La Viña, Plaza Santo Ángel and Church.
Other restrictions on road traffic (except for pedestrianised areas)
In general for all days, from 7:30am to 11am, the circulation of Loading and Unloading, Works and Public Service vehicles will be allowed, extending the timetable until 3pm for access to garages.
Authorisations for the aforementioned access will be issued at the Planning and Mobility Department of the Local Police, located at Paseo Alfonso XIII, Edificio Regidor.
From 3pm to 5pm, access will only be allowed to the Public Service. From 5pm until the end of the procession, vehicles will not be allowed access, except for Emergency Services and emergency situations in accordance with the EMSA Plan.
From the end of the parades until 7:30am, only authorised vehicles will be allowed access.
Pedestrianised area
The entry and exit of vehicles (only residents and authorised vehicles) to the pedestrianised area of Cartagena will be until 3pm hours and, in any case, it will not be possible to circulate in this area when there are less than 4 hours left before the start or after the end of the Procession.
However, for safety reasons, the final decision as to where you can walk will be at the discretion of the Local Police Services.
Impounding of vehicles
In accordance with the Law on Traffic, Motor Vehicle Circulation and Road Safety, vehicles parked along the route to be occupied by the Procession may be fined and removed by a municipal tow truck when traffic is cut off.
Procession of silence
Additionally, on the April 14, Maundy Thursday, on the occasion of the Procession of Silence, the lighting must be switched off both in public and in the shops along the route of the procession and during the procession.
Public transport
On Holy Wednesday, April 13, and Good Friday, April 15, the timetable of the City Buses will be extended until the end of the Processions.
The Icue-Bus route will be suspended in the area included in the Processions itinerary, so it won’t stop on San Diego, Gisbert and Caridad streets, but instead will stop at the intersections of Real and Castellini streets and Real and Tolosa Latour streets.
The taxi rank in Plaza de la Merced will be affected on Saturday, April 9, from 8pm, due to the transfer of processional images of the Marraja and California Brotherhoods. The early hours of Friday April 15 will be cancelled due to the Procession of the Encuentro.
The taxi rank at the Plaza de San Francisco intersection with Calle San Francisco will be out of order for the whole of the Semana Santa week, from April 8 to 17, and will be moved to the Plaza de San Francisco (west side).
Opening times for terraces
The opening hours of authorised terraces and pavement cafés in the public thoroughfare of bars, cafeterias and restaurants will also be extended until later, unless they are on the itineraries of the procession routes and in the area where the processions pass by, in which case the chairs and tables must be removed one hour before the procession passes by.
Drinking in public
Local Police wish to remind people that drinking alcohol on the streets while not at a bar is illegal, and may lead to a fine. Security Forces may also limit where people are allowed to go “for the benefit of peaceful coexistence and to prevent disturbances of order”.
Also, the Security Forces and Corps are authorised to use police and municipal vehicles as mobile barriers on the roads and pedestrian areas where it is considered appropriate in order to prevent risk situations.
