Whilst several autonomous communities across Spain are scrapping the mandatory use of the Covid passport to enter bars and other spaces, the Valencia region is bucking the trend amid rising infections and plans to seek a second extension of its use.

Valencia President, Ximo Puig, confirmed on Tuesday January 25 that the government will once again ask the Superior Court of Justice (TSJCV) to authorise an extension when the deadline expires on January 31.

The certificate is required to enter bars, restaurants, gyms, cinemas, swimming pools, sports facilities and other venues where food and drink are consumed.

Puig assured that the interdepartmental commission, which brings together all the ministries involved in the management of the pandemic, will meet this week to "analyse the situation and make the approriate decisions".

However, despite the exponential increase in the number of infections, it does not appear that the government is planning to adopt new restrictions. But those already in force, such as the use of masks in the street and, above all, the obligatory Covid passport, will be maintained.

"The situation in ICUs and hospitals is stabilising and that is the key element, but we have to be prudent, which is what we have done so far," said the president, adding: "The Public Health reports will determine the next step, but I have stressed to the Health Department that we must not reduce any measures".

Puig has been very vocal on his feelings with regards to the Covid certificate, and maintains that it "has helped to generate more stability, more security in enclosed spaces and has encouraged vaccination".

It's not clear how long the extension will be for, but media speculation suggests two to four weeks.

When questioned on why the Valencia region continues to smash pandemic records in terms of daily infections, Puig attributed the high figures to the fact "Valenica counts all positive cases and other autonomous communities do not".

"This helps to achieve greater transparency. We have always revealed all of the data we have had access to," he claimed.
