ARCHIVED - Valencia Covid update January 4: more than 22,000 infections over the weekend
The cumulative incidence rate rises to 1,600 in Valencia but remains below national average
The Christmas holidays have left their mark on the coronavirus pandemic in the Valencian Community with four times more infections than this time last year in the province of Alicante alone, but during the same period, fewer than half the number of deaths have been reported, indicating that the vaccination and booster strategy is indeed working.
The Omicron variant, which has already become the predominant strain across much of Europe, is now known to be much more transmissible but far less lethal, meaning that the rise of infections hasn’t translated into massively overburdened hospitals during the sixth wave.
Coronavirus infections
On Monday January 3, the regional health authorities in Valencia confirmed that an additional 22,832 people tested positive for Covid since the last update on New Year’s Eve, which brings the total number of cases in the region since the beginning of the pandemic to 662,937.
The new cases by province are 2,163 in Castellón (73,282 in total); 8,390 in Alicante (239,077) and 12,279 in Valencia (350,577).
The number of unassigned cases remains at one.
According to the latest data, there are currently 80,930 active cases, which represents 12% of the total positives.
Cumulative incidence rate
The 14-day incidence rate has shot up over the holiday weekend to 1600.05 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, a significant increase on the 1,082 cases reported before the weekend.
This figure still keeps Valencia well below the national average of 2,295.80 infections though, and is a far cry from the likes of Navarra and the Basque Country, which have are at 5,523 and 4,142 cases per 100,000 respectively over the last two weeks.
Hospitalisations
There are currently 1,127 people admitted to hospitals throughout the Valencian Community, 178 of them in the ICU: 169 in the province of Castellón, 25 in the ICU; 342 in the province of Alicante, 67 of them in the ICU; and 616 in the province of Valencia, 86 in the ICU.
To date, 12,968 people have overcome the disease and been discharged from hospital, bringing the total to 585,322.
By province, discharges are as follows: 65,331 in Castellón, 212,105 in Alicante and 307,830 in Valencia.
The total number of unassigned discharges remains at 56.
Fatalities
Sadly, nine further fatalities have been reported over the weekend as a result of Covid, bringing the overall death toll since the start of the health crisis to 8,126: 916 in the province of Castellón, 3,124 in Alicante and 4,086 in Valencia.
The deceased are six women between 80 and 91 years old, and three men between 57 and 65 years old.
Vaccination data
As of Monday January 3, a total of 4,072,162 people over the age of 12, or 90.7% of the target population have been double jabbed while 92.3% (4,144,852 people) have received their first dose.
Speaking at his annual New Year’s Eve address, the president of the Community, Ximo Puig, reminded that this time last year, scarcely 5,000 vaccines had been administered, while “today we are close to 10 million doses administered in the Valencian Community.”
