Wet and stormy New Year in Murcia: weather forecast December 30-January 2
Widespread rain and stormy intervals are forecast in the Region of Murcia this week
Weather outlook on New Year’s Eve, Tuesday December 31
After one of the mildest autumns in history, the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) is forecasting a major change in the weather as the end of the year approaches which will bring rain, storms and wintery temperatures to the Region of Murcia.
Although Murcianos enjoyed 20-degree temperatures and bright, sunny skies on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, the outlook shifted over the weekend and most municipalities woke up to some showers or drizzle on Saturday and Sunday. Sadly, this was just a prelude of what’s to come as we head towards New Year’s Eve.
According to the Aemet forecast, although Monday December 30 may dawn with clear skies in some municipalities, the cloud cover will build as the hours go by, resulting in a strong chance of afternoon rain in the likes of Cartagena, Murcia, Lorca and neighbouring municipalities.
Weather outlook on Monday
Towards the middle of the week, “the rain could be accompanied by storms and be locally strong on the southeastern coasts,” an Aemet spokesperson said.
New Year’s Eve, Tuesday December 31, is expected to be the wettest day of the week by far, when there’s a 90% chance of rain in the entire Vega del Segura, Lorca and along the coasts. Showers are also forecast in the regions of the Northwest and the Altiplano in the afternoon, although these should be less intense.
Weather outlook on Tuesday
Unfortunately, Aemet expects this bad weather to carry into Wednesday January 1, with a strong possibility of showers and stormy intervals throughout the Region of Murcia.
Weather outlook on Wednesday
Things will finally begin to dry up on Thursday January 2. It will be rather cloudy, although some bright spells should appear in the afternoon, and there’s still a chance of light rain along the coast during the early hours.
Weather outlook on Thursday
Over the next few days, that chill in the air will persist and on average, the temperatures will fluctuate between lows of around 1ºC and highs of 15ºC, although the thermometers could hit a slightly milder 17ºC in Murcia and neighbouring towns.
On the other hand, the mercury will sink much lower during the day in Caravaca, Jumilla and other parts of the Antiplano and the Northwest, barely exceeding 10ºC during the warmest hours.
