Why Brits in Spain are having problems watching BBC and ITV

A lot of British citizens who live in Spain or spend time in the country like to watch UK TV to keep a handle on events back home and retain a link to their native culture.

Recently, however, a great many TV viewers have noticed that several ITV and BBC channels keep dropping out and are unavailable to watch.

The problem is variously affecting ITV1, ITV2, ITV3, ITV4, BBC One, BBC Two, BBC Three and BBC Four. So what is causing this disruption?

Well, the explanation lies not in the television providers in Spain but in the channels themselves, which are currently in the process of closing their Standard Definition (SD) broadcasts and replacing them all with High Definition (HD).

The BBC closed all the SD versions of its TV channels on satellite on January 8, 2024, while ITV is closing down its SD channels on Sky TV and Freesat, with work starting this January.

As a result, some Sky TV and Freesat users have been losing regular access to ITV in 2024 while the switchover happens. Once all the work has been finished (which shouldn’t take too much longer, although no firm date has been advanced as to when exactly that will be), television viewers should retune their box in the settings. This way, the new HD channels will be found and added automatically.

TV programmes for ITV have been produced in full HD since 2015, but these have been downscaled when broadcast. Now, all BBC and ITV programmes will be available to watch in full high definition.

The main satellite that transmits UKprogrammes is focused tightly on the UKand in this region of Southern Spainwe are on the very edge of the signal.

The satellite also moves so as to power up its solar batteries and because of this some signals become weaker at various times of the day. The signal is also transmitted on 2 separate beams - Northern and Southern, the Northern beam being weaker than the Southern one. Therefore we require larger dishes to be installed in Spainthan the little meshy ones used by Sky in the UK.

Dish location can be critical, when buying a property don’t automatically assume you will be able to receive all the TV stations you want. If you are in a town house with the house facing the wrong way and houses either side shielding the satellite signal it may be impossible.
