ARCHIVED - 6th, 7th and 8th December Mediaeval market in Caravaca de la Cruz
Around 200 stalls, Mediaeval themed artisan market, with lots to buy and plenty to eat
Caravaca de la Cruz in the North-west of the Region of Murcia, hosts its annual Mediaeval market to co-incide with the Puente de la Constitución, the Bank Holiday weekend, celebrating the creation of the modern day Spanish Constitution.
Visitors can enjoy the chance to stock up on a wide range of hand-made artisan goodies for both presents and self-indulgence, breathing in the warm spiced wine, sausages and racks of ribs roasting over smoking open air BBQ’s, and the sounds of jugglers, mediaeval music and costumed artisans plying hand crafted goods, luring Christmas shoppers in packed, atmospherically decorated streets.
The city is clearly divided, with the new town clustered at the foot of the hill, and once through the arch and into the old city a different world altogether, the old quarter in which this market is held.
There are generally around 200 stallholders occupying Plaza Arco, Plaza Nueva and the streets of Las Monjas, Mayor and Rafael Tejeo. There is a fair deal of repetition with the stalls, and in spite of the volume of stallholders not as much variety as is sometimes found, but at least there's plenty to look around and lots to buy, and eat.
A wide range of demonstrations are taking place as the stallholders sell their produce, with glassblowing, bread baked in a wood-fired oven, leatherwork, ceramics and jewellers, whilst the narrow streets are crammed with mountainside organic honey, gathered by bees on the wild thyme and rosemary of the hills in the northwest (remember when buying this honey that one teaspoon of honey is the lifetime’s work of 12 bees, so it’s worth every cent), sweet Christmas pastries, goat and sheep cheeses from ecological farmers, organic wines from the regional vineyards, as well as delicatessen meat products and handmade soaps.
There are areas for children, with workshops and falconry, located at the far end of the city near to the parking areas and plenty of food stands. There are two main concentrations of food available at both ends of the market, one near Plaza del Arco and the other at the far end near to the falconry, with lots of choice and interspersed among the stalls you’ll find cakes, Arabic pastries and waffles etc. Many of the stalls close for lunch, so plan to go either in the morning or evening, as mid-day can feel a little odd, with some people open and the market itself fairly empty.
Practicalities of visiting the Caravaca de la Cruz Mediaeval market:
Parking: There is parking both by the sports ground at the "white trees" entrance from Cehegin, or by the salon de celebraciones accessed from the Moratalla road. Don't even think about driving into the centre of town as the principal roads will be closed off. Caravaca is a hilltop town, so there are cobbles and sloping streets. Personally, we park by the salon de celebraciones, as from here it's a walk down straight into the area where archery and falconry is taking place and hot food is immediately available.
Click Parking Caravaca to find the parking spaces.
Safety : It's pretty vast, so allow plenty of time to get around, and the normal safety warnings apply. It's going to be crowded, there WILL be pickpockets and thieves around, so watch where you put your wallet, don't take a handbag unless absolutely necessary and be warned, a camera dangling from an unguarded shoulder is an easy target.
Caravaca is a lovely place to visit without the Mediaeval market, so if you have any energy, walk up to the Basilica which houses the Holy Cross of Caravaca, a reliquary containing three precious splinters of the lignum crucis, the cross of Jesus. These were a gift from the Pope to replace the originals which were stolen and have never been found, and are the reason why Caravaca de la Cruz is one of only 5 Holy Cities in the world.
