ARCHIVED ARTICLE
The region appears to be slowly stabilizing due to the restrictive measures in force
On October 28th measures were brought in closing the external regional and internal municipal borders of the region and were extended for a further 14 days on November 8th. On the 6th November all bars and restaurants were forced to close as the regional government intensified its efforts to bring the level of contagions down, restrictions which were due to end this coming weekend (click to see the latest on bars and restaurants).
There has been a noticeable slowdown in the number of new covid cases diagnosed this week, bringing down the accumulated incidence rate, which is calculated based on the number of cases per 100,000 of the population, from 895 to 623 cases over a 14 day period right across the region, which is a significant improvement.
The chart shows the worst affected municipalities, with Yecla at the top with 766 per 100,000 of population. This has come down by over 200 since the beginning of the week; remember Yecla hasn´t got 766 cases, it has 766 per 100,000 of population. Using this system the number of people who actually live in the municipality is factored out. Murcia City for example, has the highest number of cases in all of the region, 862 in the last week, but as it also has the highest population (453,258), it only has an accumulated incidence rate of 190 for the last 7 days, whereas in Aledo, which only has a tiny population of 1022, just four cases gives it a rate of 391, as each case is a much higher percentage of the population.
However, there are still 11,145 active cases across the Murcia Region and hospitalisations remain high; these figures will take several weeks to come down to manageable levels, providing there isn’t another surge in new cases.
Today the regional health authority notified the detection of 455 new cases, spread across the region as follows; 85 correspond to the municipality of Murcia, 51 to Totana, 40 to Lorca, 39 to Cartagena, 35 to Yecla, 28 to Jumilla, 21 to San Javier, 22 to Torre Pacheco, 12 to Molina de Segura, 10 to Alcantarilla, 10 to Alhama from Murcia, 10 to Caravaca de la Cruz, 10 to Cieza, 8 to Cehegín, 7 to Los Alcázares, 6 to Águilas, 6 to Ceutí, 5 to Archena, and 5 to La Unión, the remainder spread across the region in smaller quantities.
The total number of cases diagnosed in the region since the pandemic began is now 50,598.
There are now 10,574 patients in home isolation with mild symptoms.
