ARCHIVED - 107,000 workers in Murcia affected by ERTE employment regulation in the coronavirus emergency
If the ERTE employees were to be made redundant the unemployment figure in Murcia would double at a stroke
The devastating economic effects of the coronavirus emergency in Spain continue to become clearer as more data become available, and in the Region of Murcia on Tuesday it was reported that the number of employees affected by “ERTE” temporary employment regulation schemes had risen to over 107,000.
These ERTE schemes effectively allow employers to temporarily stop paying all or part of the wages of their staff while social security ensures that 70 per cent of the cancelled pay is received by the employees, and have been widely used in response to the impossible situation in which many businesses have found themselves over the last month. By Tuesday lunchtime as many as 17,535 businesses had filed for ERTEs in Murcia since the declaration of the state of emergency on 14th March, and with another 646 having been added to the list in the last 24 hours it can be assumed that the figure will continue to rise.
The figure of 107,200 workers affected is a particularly significant one since it is almost identical to the number of people officially registered as out of work in the Region of Murcia at the end of March. In other words, the official jobless total in the Region of 107,312 would be doubled at a stroke if those currently subject to ERTEs were not to be taken on again by the businesses employing them are unable to pull through the current crisis.
It has been estimated by the International Labour Organization that around the world the number of people in paid employment will fall by 6.7 per cent as a result of the pandemic, and that Europe, unsurprisingly, will be one of the areas worst affected in the second quarter of 2020. The global figure equates to 195 million people losing their full-time jobs, a drop described by the ILO’s Director-General Guy Ryder as “extraordinary”.
At the same time, while praising the efforts of numerous national governments to soften the economic blow and protect employment, Mr Ryder calls for more “international coordination” of the kind on which the European Union has so far continually failed to agree.
In making comparisons between the coronavirus pandemic and other economic crises in the past the ILO is no longer referring to the recession of 2008 or the petroleum and oil crisis of the 1970s. Instead, the preferred point of reference is none other than the Second World War as the number of workers affected continues to rise sharply.
In addition to those made redundant, the measures to combat the pandemic throughout the world are now estimated to have affected 2,700 million “official” workers, with another 2,000 million “informal” workers facing problems (mainly in Latin America, Asia and Africa). These informal workers have little or no access to health and social protection services, making them particularly vulnerable not only to the virus itself but also to the financial and economic fallout it is causing throughout the world.
Remember: LOCKDOWN MEANS LOCKDOWN. STAY AT HOME. STAY SAFE AND DO YOUR BIT TO REDUCE THE SPREAD OF CORONAVIRUS.

What to do if you are in the Region of Murcia and believe you may have contracted the virus
The regional government has set up a special helpline to supply information to members of the public (900 121212) if they suspect that they may have contracted the virus rather than going straight to hospital or to a medical centre.
Sensible precautions
The advice being issued to members of the public by medical authorities all over the world coincides on the following points:
- Wash hands frequently with either soap and water or a sanitiser gel
- Catch coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues – and throw the tissues away immediately after use before immediately washing your hands!
- If you don’t have a tissue, use your sleeve – and wash the item of clothing used at the next opportunity
- AVOID touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- AVOID close contact with people who are unwell
- Don´t panic!
