The first death of a resident who contracted covid-19 in a care home of the Region of Murcia occurred within the last 24 hours, a 74 year old man with pre-existing medical conditions, resident in the Caser care home in Lorca, where he presumably contracted the virus, who died in the Rafael Méndez hospital in Lorca.
His death brings the total number of fatalities to 164.
This graphic shows the municipalities with the highest rate per 100,000 of population, which is now headed up by Jumilla. The rate in Fuente Álamo has halved in the last week, showing the additional measures are having an impact.
88 cases in care homes
On Monday morning regional minister for health, Manuel Villegas, confirmed that there are now 88 cases in the care homes of the Murcia Region, and the cases have now spread to 9 of the 116 public and private care homes in the region, rising from 64 cases and six care homes on Friday. 11 care home workers must quarantine for 14 days after PCR tests gave a positive result for covid prior to them resuming work with the elderly following their summer holiday.
It is believed that some of the contagions in the 9 care homes in which cases have currently been reported could have entered via care home employees. Protocols to ensure all care home workers are PCR tested prior to their reincorporation into the staff following a break and are regularly tested following their return to work should have been put in place before the return of the first staff in August and the regional health authority is investigating if that was indeed the case in these outbreaks.
400 care home employees have been covid tested in the last few days.
266 new cases
The figures reported on Monday relate to the 24 hour period up to midnight on Sunday 6th and it is normal for figures on Monday to be slightly lower than any other day of the week due to there being less staff working on a Sunday to gather data and undertake PCR testing.
266 new cases have been reported in this latest batch of figures, broken down by municipality as follows: 114 correspond to the municipality of Murcia, 17 to Cartagena, 17 to Molina de Segura, 15 to Jumilla, 13 to Alcantarilla, 11 to Lorca, 11 to Mazarrón, 11 to Las Torres de Cotillas, 7 to Águilas, 6 to Caravaca de la Cruz , 6 to Ceutí, and 6 to Lorquí. The remainder are distributed amongst various locations in smaller quantities.
The table below shows the total cases to date by municipality, together with the incidence in the last 7 and 14 day period.
30 new hospitalisations
The additional cases reported bring the total number of active cases in the region to 4,913 cases.
Of these 265 are hospitalised, following an increase of 30 cases in the last 24 hours, 50 of whom are in intensive care.
The remaining 4,648 patients are in home isolation with mild symptoms.
Since the crisis first began, the region has detected 10,969 cases in total, 9,263 of them via the PCR testing method (4,186 of whom have now been officially cured) and 1,706 via the antibody test method.
These cases are not included in the cured lists as technically they have not been detected by PCR and only PCR cases are included in the national covid figures.
