ARCHIVED - 383 new positives and one death: Covid Murcia Friday 4th
There are now 4,432 active cases in the Region of Murcia
Graphic 1 shows the rise in hospitalisations in the region. the blue is general admissions, the red is ICU
Daily Covid figures for the Murcia region on Friday 4th September are slightly lower than the record high of Thursday 3rd, but are still very high, with 383 new cases diagnosed within the last 24 hours.
This latest set of new positives brings the overall total since the beginning of the pandemic up to 9,948 and the number of positives currently active to 4,432.
4,213 of these positives relate to mild cases or asymptomatic cases and are in home isolation. This leaves 219 patients in hospital with more severe symptoms and 51 in intensive care units.
The new cases are spread right around the region, although the municipalities with the highest number of cases are those which have been most in the news throughout the week.
Lorca, which is starting to really worry the authorities, has 83 new infections, Murcia city has 96, there are 42 in Cartagena, 24 in Jumilla, 20 in Totana, 15 in Águilas, 15 in Torre Pacheco, 14 in Molina de Segura, 12 in Caravaca de la Cruz, 11 in Yecla, 7 in Mazarrón, 7 in Las Torres de Cotillas, 6 in Alcantarilla, 6 in Mula, 5 in Puerto Lumbreras and 5 in San Pedro del Pinatar, with the remainder scattered around the region in smaller quantities.
Graphics 2 and 3 show the total numbr of cases by municipality across the region, broken down by district in the worst affected municipalities.
Unfortunately, there has been one further death; an 80 year old female with pre-existing medical conditions from Los Alcázares, who died in the hospital Los Arcos del Mar Menor, in San Javier. Her death brings the regional total up to 161.
The number of patients hospitalised has fallen slightly on Friday from 225 yesterday to 219 on Friday, but the number of patients in intensive care has risen by 12 to 51.
The number of cured cases grew by 152 during the last 24 hours to 3,649.
The regional authorities have continued to focus on building the volume of PCR tests undertaken daily and on Thursday carried out 2,547 PCR tests and 104 antibody tests.
The regional president has today complained that Covid positives are still arriving in the region through airports without being PCR tested; today he was complaining about two more positives who have arrived recently from Bolivia on a flight through Barajas in Madrid and demanding that the Spanish Government insist on PCR tests before passengers arrive in Spain, but the reason that Covid is spreading like wildfire in the region at this moment is NOT because of the odd foreigner arriving in Spain with Covid, but because of the home-grown idiots who are ignoring common sense and making a mockery of the sacrifices made for months by all of us who are playing ball, working hard to keep our businesses alive through this crisis and who ARE wearing our masks and observing social distancing.
Last night I had to go shopping (no dogfood left, always a crisis) and I saw groups of people walking in the street in Cartagena without masks, there were people sitting outside bars in the street and standing on the pavement outside bars chatting away without masks on, and every day there are reports about groups of young people holding private parties at home, and spreading the virus.
Graphic 3 shows the number of cases per 100,000 of population, showing that Jumilla and Lorca are now the two most-affected municipalities:
Jumilla has today overtaken Fuente Álamo as the municipality with the highest number of cases per capita, why, because the fiestas del vino were cancelled so groups of people had got together at home to hold private parties instead and now there are a series of outbreaks in the municipality; the cause of the confinement in Archivel in Caravaca de la Cruz is a BBQ held by young people and on it goes.
The sad truth is that young people have got so much to lose if this situation continues; it's their jobs that will go when businesses are forced to make lay-offs. Jumilla bodegas have got millions of litres of wine unsold because bars and restaurants have been closed for months due to lockdown and yet the spread of the virus in the municipality now, which will result in further restrictions for the businesses of the municipality and may end up forcing some businesses to close down altogether, is being caused by people who can´t just accept that a few sacrifices have to be made for a short period for the greater good and to protect their own futures.
How the transmission of this virus will ever stop when those who have got the most to lose if this crisis continues for another year are being so stupid and selfish is not clear, but there's no point making rules if they're not being enforced!
