ARCHIVED - 3 irregular migrants airlifted to safety as 130 reach Murcia coastline
Another wave of irregular migrants; more than 130 people in 10 boats reach Murcia
On Friday evening and the early hours of Saturday morning another organised wave of pateras appeared off the Murcian coastline, bringing irregular economic migrants from Algeria to Spain.
During Friday evening seven boats containing a total of 98 migrants were detected off the Cartagena coastline, and later in the evening the Giardia Civíl located 4 further migrants who had reached the coast.
17 further irregular migrants were detected in Águilas to the south of the Cabo de Cope eight nautical miles out at sea and were intercepted before they reached the coast.
At 01:55 in the morning a tenth boat was located 5.6 nautical miles from the coast, heading towards Cartagena and containing 18 migrants.
3 of the migrants had to be rescued by firemen and a helicopter from the regional CEIS fire and rescue service after their boat landed in a rocky area with poor access and they attempted to climb Monte de las Cenizas.
The two men and one woman had to be airlifted from the side of the mountain.
The fireman engaged in this close contact rescue lift has no idea whether he is dealing with a positive individual or not; he is simply rescuing somebody in need of help.
All of the new arrivals will temporarily be housed in the Escombreras port area in Cartagena, which has been reinforced to try and prevent the escape of the migrants until it can be determined whether any of their number are Covid positive.
All will be given a PCR test and if one person in any of the ten boats proves positive, then all those who shared that boat will be quarantined and the Covid positive hospitalised. 30 Covid positive patients were released from hospital this week after arriving in Murcia with covid and more than 250 were quarantined from the last wave of arrivals.
In the eventuality that none of the migrants in a given boat proves to be positive, they will be released to continue their journey as the Spanish authorities cannot currently repatriate them to their country of origin due to the Algerian and Moroccan borders being closed because of the covid crisis.
Click to read an article written yesterday explaining the problems caused for the region by this recent increased number of migrants and the diplomatic attempts being made to reduce the numbers able to cross to Spain.
So far this year, over 11,000 migrants have arrived irregularly on the Spanish coastline, according to data from the Ministry of the Interior, and approximately a quarter are Algerians. Although the number of migrants arriving in Spain has fallen by 35% compared to 2019, the percentage of Algerians has been increasing steadily since last year.
The migrants who arrived in the boats on Friday and Saturday are all Algerians and are economic migrants.
Street protests and general dissatisfaction with the Algerian regime, along with “restrictions on mobility, the liquidity crisis and the lack of opportunities have been added to the old evils,”says a senior analyst at the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime think tank in an interview this week.
"Added to this are the violations of freedoms, judicial harassment against activists and citizens and the authoritarianism of a regime which is dying, but is reluctant to embrace any idea of democratic change". Furthermore, the social crisis is compounded by the prolonged economic deterioration derived from the collapse of oil prices, in a country extremely dependent on hydrocarbons, and the marked youth unemployment.
This dependence on hydrocarbons is part of the reason for the cordial relations between Spain and Algeria, due to the dependence of Spain on Algerian gas. Up until the last few months 50% of Spain’s gas reached the country via direct pipelines between the two countries; this dependence however, is gradually lessening as Spain widens its portfolio of providers.
The rise in organised crime is also contributing to an increased interest in young Algerians crossing to Spain, with organised criminal gangs running over boatloads in high-speed boats rather than the method traditionally used by Algerians, which was the purchase of a boat amongst friends and a less organised structure.
Further boats are expected this weekend due to the favourable weather conditions.
