ARCHIVED ARTICLE
Spain passed the 1.5 million cases mark having added half a million new cases in just 27 days to the overall total
On Tuesday the Spanish Ministry of Health reported 435 deaths from COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, which represents a new maximum during the second wave and raises the death toll to 41,688.
Spain also passed another sad marker point in the pandemic on Tuesday by exceeding one and a half million infections, a level that only five other countries with much larger populations have reached ; United States, India, Brazil, France and Russia.
13,159 new cases of coronavirus were added to the running total, which brings the total of positives diagnosed during the entire pandemic to 1,510,023.
It’s taken just 27 days, from October 21st to November 17th, to add half a million positives to the running total, averaging more than 18,500 new infected every day.
The 13,159 new positives on Tuesday is a very positive figure, as it is the lowest number of infected for more than a month, (on October 14th 11,970 new positives were registered) and is directly attributable to the restrictions being imposed by regional governments since the state of emergency was declared.
A fall in new cases also leads to a fall in the accumulated incidence rate (AI) which is calculated based on the number of cases per 100,000 of population and the AI rate for the country as a whole fell, falling from 470 cases per 100,000 inhabitants on Monday to 465.86 per 100,000 inhabitants on Tuesday.
Even so, in nine autonomous communities, especially in areas that are being hit harder by the second wave of the pandemic, the incidence increased slightly, although not enough to offset the general decline nationwide. These are the regions of Andalusia, Asturias, the Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands, Cantabria, Castilla-La Mancha, Castilla y León, the Valencian Community and Madrid, which after more than a month of constant decline suffered a slight rebound on Tuesday.
However, it is important to note that the number of new cases reported depends entirely on the number of PCR tests being undertaken, and these have fallen due to the decline in gatherings notified officially.
Fatalities:
Unfortunately, as the number of new infections starts to fall, the number of fatalities are increasing as the virus works its way through the positive cases.
Spain again broke its mortality record for this second wave by adding 435 deaths to the total on Tuesday, taking the fatalities total to 41,668.

The percentage of occupation of hospital beds of patients with coronavirus was also reduced a few tenths, to 16.13%, and the occupation of ICU beds by patients with covid also decreased slightly to 32.31%.
Number of PCR tests taken:
Between November 7th and November 13th, 1,135,546 tests have been carried out, of which 806,572 have been PCR and 328,974 antigen tests. The total positivity rate stands at 12.38 percent nationwide.
